Cole in Salon: Gaza and the End of Neoconservatism

My column is out in Salon.com, "Neoconservatism dies in Gaza: The recent Israeli offensive has put the final nail in the coffin of the Bush administration's Middle East fantasy.".
Excerpt:

' The Gaza War of 2009 is a final and eloquent testimony to the complete failure of the neoconservative movement in United States foreign policy. For over a decade, the leading figures in this school of thought saw the violent overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the institution of a parliamentary regime in Iraq as the magic solution to all the problems in the Middle East. They envisioned, in the wake of the fall of Baghdad, the moderation of Hezbollah in Lebanon, the overthrow of the Baath Party in Syria and the Khomeinist regime in Iran, the deepening of the alliance with Turkey, the marginalization of Saudi Arabia, a new era of cheap petroleum, and a final resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on terms favorable to Israel. After eight years in which they strode the globe like colossi, they have left behind a devastated moonscape reminiscent of some post-apocalyptic B movie. As their chief enabler prepares to exit the White House, the only nation they have strengthened is Iran; the only alliance they have deepened is that between Iran and two militant Islamist entities to Israel's north and south, Hezbollah and Hamas.'

Looking at the failure of most Democrats failing to take a stand against the disaster that Israel is creating in Gaza, I think one can say that the Danger of the Neoconservative dream continuing to blind the US political establishment is all too real.

I don't think it was a failure in their eyes - I think it turned out exactly like they wanted.

they are vile creatures

Reportedly, Israel may have been hoping to open a second 'front' with Lebanon. This seems to have started:

Your article exposes, with evidence and clarity, how dumb the neocons and not just dangerous.

But the neocons are not alone. The entire Establishment, with very few exceptions, do want to dictate to the whole world, and do see Israel as an extension of the USA and a savage attack dog to use without having to worry about US or international laws (it is not us, its Israel.)

Their policies are only a failure if you naively assume their *stated* goals are their actual goals.

This a common error made by western so-called "leftist" intellectuals. It's not that you know better than them, it's simply that they aren't after what you are after. Bush, Cheney, etc are *not* idiots. Evil, yes, but not idiots.

Thanks.

Dennis Ross is back: I told you so, damn it

[Neoconservatism is alive and well in the Obama ranks and presumably with Obama.]

I stand corrected

I was certain that Obama would disappoint once he became president. I did not know that he would succeed in disappointing before assuming the presidency.

[Where is Obama's voice for peace, since we have heard the Obama voice for war in Afghanistan repeatedly?]

Juan that may be one of your best pieces - and I have read them all

Obama has promised swift action on the Gaza Debacle once he takes office

We'll see

My hunch is that his pal Sarkozy is the guy to watch. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Sarko has been acting as Obama's defacto SecState

In any event, its clear-eyed supporters know that it is past time for a little tough love for Israel, as Nick Kristoff put it in today's NyT op-ed

Reid asked us to imagine rockets falling on Washington as the Senate just passed a resolution of support for Israel on a voice vote

Imagine those rockets being fired from the concentration ghetto of Anacostia

To quote Pat Buchanan, "the US Congress is Israeli-Occupied Territory"
