Look, these polls are obvious nonsense:
"72% of Afghans rated President Hamid Karzai as excellent or good "

How come he had to stuff all those ballot boxes then? And still only got 2 million votes?

This is the sort of answer you'd get if you carried out an opinion poll in Zimbabwe or Burma.

"Afghanistan is the fourth or fifth poorest country in the world, and both the US and NATO have announced a big investment in their security and economic development. Wouldn't that be good news for most Afghans?"

Thank you for explaining that we are developing Afghanistan after all this time. I would never have guessed. I guess development at a cost of more than $100 billion a year for American soldiers alone would be cheap at twice the price.

What labor intensive resources does Afghanistan posses that would support economic development? Labor intensiveness is required so the wealth gets spread around. Oil and gas don't do this.

There is one opportunity that comes to mind, the poppy. Maybe the West and China can develop utilitarian uses and products for poppy derived substances. Then establish an international protocol that gives Afghanistan a 20 year monopoly on production.

Just a thought. (Kinda modeled on the corn to ethanol programs in the US.)

Interesting post, Juan. What a horrible mess, One guaranteed to have no good outcome. The audacity of the United States is breathtaking.
