Walthen: I saw 100 Dolphins in the Oil, some Dying

Posted on 06/29/2010 by Juan

John L. Walthen and companions take a helicopter trip out over the Gulf of Mexico.

“This was the most emotionally disturbing video I have ever done!

A flight over the BP Slick Source where I saw at least 100 Dolphins in the oil, some dying. I also photographed a Sperm Whale covered in oil all around it’s blow hole.”

“At 17 miles out, it was obvious that the entire Gulf was covered at this point. There was no more clean water.”

In some countries, the perpetrators of such an immense crime against nature would be arrested, tried, and executed, though not necessarily in that order. Tony Hayward wants his life back. So sorry, Tony, stand over there, please. I want my Gulf back.

  • R in NY says:

This video is horrifying. It should be shown on national news programs every night, so that we Americans will understand the price we pay for oil.

    • PS, Toronto says:

That’s just it — We WON’T see this every night on the television news. Here’s an event that will have massive impacts on the environmental, economic, and public health over a vast area, inside and outside the US. And yet, like you write, there will be little in the way of actual coverage of these impacts. Herman and Chomsky’s book (Manufacturing Consent) may well be some 20 years old now, but it seems it’s still quite on the mark in this case.

  • Dredd says:

One outrageous aspect of this debacle is that scientists studied the Gulf of Mexico seabed and found it unstable and dangerous to drilling in many places.

They foresaw an ecological and economic disaster of great impact if oil rigs drilled into some of the more unstable areas.

The study by scientists commissioned by the U.S. government goes back a decade.
