Cole at CNN: Now the US Should Get out of Iraq’s Politics

My essay, “Now the US should get out of Iraq’s Poltics,” is now at the CNN web site.

Excerpt:

“Washington should stop trying to shoehorn its favorite into office, should stop showing favoritism to some ethnic groups over others, and should show some understanding of the necessity for good relations between Iraq and Iran (which are becoming major trading partners). When it comes to the military and political balance, the U.S. has done enough damage, and can best help Iraqis by allowing them to return to being an independent country.”

Surely the same argument can be made about Iran, no? Isn’t it fair to say that Iran is currently exerting more political influence to “shoehorn its prefered candidates” into office than the US is?

  2. “Should” ?

When has the USA ever been either sensible or ethical (whatever this particular “should” was intended to mean)? Our rulers’ actions like their speeches are calculated to satisfy (as far as may be) the loose coalition of special interests which constitute the “establishment”, not to make sense (or, heaven forbid, be ethical).

How about, “The USA should require Israel to comply with the Fourth Geneva Convention”, hmmm? (Well, it is ethical, it is the law, and it would promote peace. But so what?

  3. Well, I shall ask

Surely the same argument can be made about Afghanistan??

  4. the same argument can be made about Iran, no?

Sure. But I presume Mr. Cole is addressing an audience where the his views are likely to carry better.

Furthermore, as with say the US and Canada, the two neighbours have legitimate mutual interests and concerns that far outweigh those of a would-be coloniser on the other side of the world.

Third, the US was/is the aggressor, the problem, not Iran. At least not to the same degree (yet).

  5. “When it comes to the military and political balance, the U.S. has done enough damage, and can best help Iraqis by allowing them to return to being an independent country.”

Really something how the U.s. can direct un manned drones to find and destroy “terrorist” and kill innocent people in the process yet our military have been unable to count the numbers of Iraqi people who have died, been injured and displaced as a direct result of our invasion.

Ever hear our MSM focus on those numbers. Nah

  6. Have yet to hear Chris Matthews, Rachel, Keith etc address the increased in private contractors in Iraq. The other day Rachel Maddow was in the Green Zone and basically did a defense contractor commercial. Rachel has also repeated the debunked “Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map” hooey. So much for those progressive MSM host
