Omar Khayyam (137) : … Wounded the Heart…

Posted on 06/16/2012 by Juan Cole

The one who made
the heavens and the earth
has wounded the heart
of many a mourner;
he has put many ruby lips
and perfumed locks
six feet beneath the ground.

from Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, [pdf] Whinfield 137

  • Indeed the god of The Book is the killer of romance and poetry. He has “wounded the heart
    of many a mourner…”
    The mourners obviously came before the murder.
    To mourn is to be human. It is a fatal state.

    What did they mourn first?
    I suggest the notion of god.
    I think Bro. Khayyam would agree.

    What do you think, Juan?
