Top Ten Things Anthony “Carlos Danger” Weiner has said that are worse than Sexting

Reprint Edition:

The real scandal surrounding Anthony Weiner is that he is bigoted against Palestinians and used to misuse his position in Congress to support punitive policies against them. Americans appear to be bored by policy, titillated by private peccadilloes [well, OK, years later it is clear that these are a mental problem, not just peccadilloes]. But it is the policies that are important. Mahatma Gandhi was once kicked out of a brothel in South Africa. No one judges him by his lapses. Weiner, in contrast to Gandhi, has not worked for peace but has rather given knee-jerk support to the worst policies of the most far rightwing parties in Israel toward Palestinians. A social liberal in American terms, Weiner is so blinded by his allegiance to Israel and so studied in his ignorance of the Middle East that he . . . played a uniformly sinister role in that aspect of foreign policy [when he was in Congress] . . . And no one, not Chris Matthews or anyone else, ever called on him to leave public life for this inhumanity.

Weiner:

1. Called for Columbia University professor Joseph Massad to be fired for being critical of Israel; Weiner thus spearheaded a new McCarthyism.

2. On the Israeli attack, in international waters, on the Mavi Marmara relief ship, Weiner sputtered: “”If you want to instigate a conflict with the Israeli navy it isn’t hard to do. They were offered alternatives. Instead they chose to sail into the teeth of an internationally recognized blockade.” The blockade of Gaza civilians is a breach of international law; it is not internationally recognized and has on the contrary been condemned by almost every nation and human rights organization.

3. Alleged that the New York Times is anti-Israel: “Amnesty International in particular, has always had bias against Israel, and frankly I would argue that in many cases, the New York Times has, as well.”

4. Alleged that the Palestine Liberation Organization is still listed by the US as a terrorist organization. It was dropped from the list over 2 decades ago.

5. Tried to bar the Palestinian delegation to the United Nations from New York.

6. Alleged that Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestine Authority, is not the head of the PLO. He is.

7. Refused to condemn the use by Israel of cluster bombs on the civilian farms of south Lebanon in 2006.

8. Alleged that the Israeli army does not occupy the West Bank and that there is no Israeli Army presence in the West Bank.

9. Called Israel’s war on Gaza a “humane” war. 400 children were killed.

10. Voted for Iraq War authorization in 2002, before later turning against the war.

  1. So this person is not just a creepy fool but an ignorant, bigoted creepy fool…

  2. Weiner is, by definition, a psychopath, IMO.
His wife is an enabler; and together they want political power. I have no doubt the mayor-ship of New York City would have been a stepping stone to the governorship of New York and then on to congress once again, and then the presidency of the U.S.
I trust neither one of that couple. If he is not finished, he should be. A very dangerous guy…

  3. All points that mainstream media organizations will leave unmentioned because, on balance, the major news outlets (including the ‘anti-Israel’ New York Times) agree with Weiner (or would not dare disagree).

The video, by the way, is missing. My guess: One of Google’s (YouTube owner’s) acts of censorship in kneejerk response to a summary demand.

Another guess: The only reason that Weiner can entertain staying in the race for New York mayor at all is because he enjoys such unqualified support from the Israel lobby.

  4. Anthony Weiner is a serial sexter whose sophomoric personal life mirrors his equally sophomoric political views. It takes real chutzpah and gall for him to think he has anything of value to offer New Yorkers.

Equally disgusting is his wife who obviously supports both his serial attempts at “redemption” and his policies. When his wife stood beside him, looking at him with google eyes and “forgiving” him, she was participating in the ritual exercise in self-humiliation. Or, perhaps, she, too, is desperate to live in the New York City Mayor’s mansion.

They both deserve each other. New York does not deserve either of them.

    • “google eyes”

Shouldn’t this be “goo-goo eyes”? I thought “Google eyes” were those spiffy new display-screen glasses.

  5. And I assume we know where he stands on our fighting Israel’s trumped up conflict with Iran for them.

Note that Helen Thomas is the only person who had to give up her public position b/c of her stance and her remarks about Israel and Palestine. A stellar decades-long career destroyed while this Bozo and his equally ambitious wife just keep on going. It doesn’t matter how much of a depraved bigot you are if you’ve got the Lobby behind you.

  6. Huma Abedin hosting first ‘Women for Weiner.” Someone should have consulted a PR person before going with that fundraising name.

  7. Did Weiner really turn against the war in Iraq? I’m sure he voted to fund it every time it came up for a vote. That is the only kind of support for war that matters. No matter what he said about being against it, he voted to fund it.

  8. Thanks for the news on Weiner, know one is talking about his platform. I don’t care about anyone sex life as long as it is consensual. The information you have provided Juan Cole is enough to reveal where this candidate stands. Thanks for not adding any photos!

  9. It is OK to post this information about Weiner’s attitudes on other issues, but please don’t dismiss his behavior merely as some kind of “sex scandal.” Weiner has a serious problem with the way he thinks of and treats women. At the very least he is disrespectful of them and some of his actions have arguably been those of a sexual predator. At least one of the incidents of texting pictures of his penis were done without the prior consent of the recipient. There is also the campaign appearance where he was taking questions from the audience and asked a woman who raised her hand, “Did you have a question, or are you trying to flirt with me?” He needs to go away quietly and continue his therapy to figure out why he has such hostility to women.

  10. Harsh comments here. Let’s cut the brother a break. He’s hardly evil incarnate and he worked hard on behalf of working people when he was in Congress. Some of you are so quick to turn and so hard. Who among you is so innocent, cast the first stone.

    • Actually I think he may be evil incarnate. And he hasn’t worked very hard on behalf of the working and suffering people of Palestine. Cutting people breaks is what keeps venal toadies in Congress.

    • Harsh comments ?

The man is depraved, shows poor judgement and serial insincerity, lust for power and is the worst sort of neocon.

The comments are pretty kid-glove considering.

    • Oh please. He was a grandstanding politician who didn’t have a single legislative accomplishment when he was in the House. And an abusive boss as well:

To basically say that a politician has to be “evil incarnate” to receive the sort of criticism his actions merit is to set the bar nonsensically high.

    • Yes, he did appear to speak up for the “working people”, but I don’t recall him getting anything done.

“…the brother…”? The “brother” is ill and needs an intervention, not a position of trust.

    • John, you seem to forget that the litany of his derelictions is not exclusively sexual. It appears that his first loyalty has been, contrary to his congressional oath, to a foreign country, the state of Israel over there in Asia. We Americans have an obligation to object to that behavior.

Nationalism is a bit out of fashion today but men in public office have an obligation not to set another country’s interests against those of their own.

  11. I beg your pardon, all those things and more are time tested, top vote getters. It is rather very simple and most everybody now does it instinctively, denigrate the Palestinian and place Zionist on a pedestal above reproach.

  12. It’s interesting to know these things about Weiner, but JC is giving too much credence to Weiner’s views on Israel. As Cole surely knows, Weiner merely recites the default position of a Congressman with a heavily Jewish, Brooklyn constituency. (For whatever it’s worth, my father is a Brooklyn Jew and I am a New Jersey Jew.) There’s nothing really “scandalous” about this. It just shows that the huge project of changing American minds and influencing public opinion on Israel needs to continue.
