"free Libyans with light arms" ?!? LOL!! The damage done to Libyan AFV's was from NATO FB's and AHC's directed by NATO FAC's. I've said it before and I'll say it again; there will be a NATO occupation fronted by Cyrenaican puppets/useful idiots
I suppose all of us Old Boys have our favorite wars; mine is the American Civil War and this one must be yours. Anyhow, what's this I hear about the Felter-Fishman 2007 West Point Study about our new pals in Cyrenaica?
There' a flaw in your hypothesis and it is this; there have been no "revolutions" in Tunisia and Egypt. The essential power structure in both states remains the same. Presidential resignations and "soft" coups do not a rvolution make.
Why bother indeed! On 09/02/2010 I cast my last ballot. I've been growing increasingly despondent over the dog and pony show we call "democracy". In a final act of desperation and outrage,I marked the "straight party ticket" line on the ballot paper. I marked it "republican", shoved it into the counting machine and left. I HAD NO CHOICE; I am not suicidal, nor am I deluded. I cannot willingly participate in the destruction of my country. I can no longer "hold my nose" and vote for a Democrat who will do nothing to stop it's destruction. And I will no longer vote "third party" as they (usually) have a snowball's chance in hell of winning. Goodbye to all that!
My questions go back to 1988/'89...Why were the street demos in the late GDR heralded as the blossoming of freedom, while those in Egypt initially described as "chaos" and "anarchy" as they were in my local fishwrap
(Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)? Why does the "only democracy in the middle east" continue to raise the alarm against the emergence of "mullah-cracy"?
I don't believe that this is the end. If the sleeper has indeed awakened, there may be some interesting times ahead for Egypt. The forces of state oppression can't kill them all; some will go underground and continue to resist. Egypt is not dead yet.
O ya you betcha! Only as long as you keep that police permit handy, and restrict yourself to a designated "Free Speech Zone", if not, well, hope your health insurance is paid-up!
Opposing a dictator does'nt make one a "theocrat". I for one do not see the Egyptians embracing theocracy anytime soon. We here in the US have our own fundamentalist problem, and IT is every bit as antidemocratic as anything that has emerged from any Muslim seminary!
There's a lotta' weird stuff flying around...El Baredei a CIA stooge, MB ties with Iran, Izzies fleeing Cairo in disguise, shoot-to-kill orders for the army, Gaza crossing sealed (yet fuel deliveries from Egypt to Izzy continue).
Meanwhile the USG has'nt dumped mubarak YET and calls for "reform". Funny; that's not what the Egyptians in the street are calling for. WH and State press conferences are a bad joke; I dug hillary trotting out her new pet bulldog (colombian VP)!!!
Okay, they're funny and so is John Stewart. However their show is broadcast by the VOA and that makes them propagandists as well. We would do well to remember that we are being sold on another war.
I agree, there are indeed dark forces at work here. I understand there were accomplices with the shooter; look for associations with the militia movement. This was an act of political terrorism. BTW, have a look at this...www.legitgov.org/SarahPac-Called-Ariz-Congresswoman-be-Targeted
Astonishing imbecillity from the likes of Broder. Obama will be lucky to find the time to start his Iran war, as he'll be taken up with another more personal struggle. I predict that the coming Republican majority in the House will, like it did his partisan predecessor, impeach him. Or try to. In any case, his presidency will be effectively over.
..."starvation and OTHER HAZARDS OF WAR"?!?! In which little dungheap did you find that nonsense? Starvation was policy, as was mass deportation and mass murder. That policy was carried out by EVERY branch of the German military on the Eastern Front. The millions of non-combatant deaths that occurred did so not due to hazard or accident, but intentionally.
I am familiar with this variety of borderline personality disorder; I don't know what else to call it. While this revelation might prove controversial ( I certainly hope so) it's not surprising. Rep. Iott, or should I say faux-sturmmann Iott is an "enthusiast". These people fancy themselves as "living historians" yet all they really are, are enthusiasts. And for the Waffen SS ? The reader is invited to draw their own conclusions.
Dr. Cole, the Obama administration is prosecuting peace activists. Those activists may get off with a wrist-slap this time, but I doubt that they will the next time and there will be a next time. Most governments find "mere speech" that is contrary to their policy dangerous.
...and passed by substantial majorities. For them the bloom has not yet fallen off the rose. Perhaps they should try attending a few Codependents Anonymous meetings.
As the child is father to the man, how can we expect our colonial constabulary to do any better than ourselves? I'm thinking of how WE treated our "unlawful combatant detainees" incarcerated at Baghram, Guantanamo, Abu Graib, and elsewhere.
Dr. Cole; I thank you for your occasional comments on domestic issues. For my part, I believe that the income tax rates of the Kennedy-Johnson era should be restored. Paying taxes is the cost of civilization, or so I've thought, but I am an old fool.
The anxiety in the north is premature. That's because the "combat brigades" are NOT leaving. There are still enough people to Joint patrol with the Peshmerga and the INA. For that matter, that behemoth embassy in the Green Zone isn't going anywhere either. Rest assured people; the occupation will go on indefinitely. Uncle Sam never walks away from equity.
I hate to sound like a skipping record, but the actual butchers' bill (for the Iraqis) is more like 1.3 to 1.4 million dead, not to mention 4 million refugees. But who does body counts...
I have almost always believed that we have the best politicians money can buy. They will always do the bidding of their paymasters. I reiterate my futile demand for radical campaign finance reforms including the criminalization of lobbying.
Limited War has a strange and rather short history,as it was actually practiced. It requires the consent of all co-belligerents. No such consensus exists between the U.S. and Iran. Once started the violence will spiral out of control. If that happens, history will condemn the mad fools on the Potomac.
...and yet it IS a portmanteau word in the sense that it describes a militant organization, and it's affiliates, strongly influenced by Deobandi Islam.

Hey kids, don't you fret...the Spooky's and Warthogs are on the job!! I can hardly wait 'till they do a "Falluja" on Tripoli!! (sarchasm alert)

I agree...so many books-so little time.
I fervently hope that this is the first day of the revolution. Egypt needs real change. Mubarak must go.
Okay, they're funny and so is John Stewart. However their show is broadcast by the VOA and that makes them propagandists as well. We would do well to remember that we are being sold on another war.
Is that Frank Conniff none other than "TV's Frank",Dr.Forrester's dogsbody from MST3K??

What nonsense;the wingnuts, and this includes the teabaggers, will always find excuses enough to spend tax dollars on war and empire.
The "mere gook rule" lives on. Who is a "gook" you may well
ask? Anyone the USG does'nt like at any given moment.
Yes; I like the new look too. As to Mr. Obama...he's an invertebrate.
They ought to reserve the Slobodan Milosevic suite in the Hague for the bastard!

1. answer given 2. yes 3. hmmm,could be 4. profits! 5. well, duh! 6. 'betchur boots, pard' 7. humongous 8. absolutely 9. you betcha' 10. oh yeah...
No...obviously Palin weighs more than a Duck, therefore she will not float; therefore we should build a bridge out of her.

Davey Jones will have plus objet for his vast collection.

"Is anyone using Milosevic cell at the Hauge these days?", unknown. If it's vacant then it should be reserved for Bush and Blair.

Right On, bro'.
