I'm totally confused by all sides on this. Is it true that we have zero presence in Benghazi the past couple months? I see that the Syrian rebels got heavy machine guns capable of shooting down airplanes/helicopters from somewhere. Was it Libya? Security is now too bad in Tripoli for the US, British and French embassies. Is security for westerners ok anywhere in Libya right now? If not is it due to anti-ghaddafi militias or pro-ghadhafi militias? Thanks!
Juan: A month ago you did a post on Japan and Fukushima. Your readers comments suggest they believe the risks from this event are minimal. To me, the facts seem to indicate a complete meltdown at Fukushima occurred in several reactors and this has led to not only no containment but that all the nuclear material from those reactors has been lost. Here are the articles that support this.
India Halts All Food Imports From Japan After Fukushima Fish Found With Excess Radioactivity http://www.zerohedge.com/article/fukushima-smoking-gun-emerges-founding-engineer-says-reactor-4-has-always-been-time-bomb-exp Since we west coasters have been consuming all this cesium, strontium and radioactive Iodine for 2 years I wish you would address this. Thanks!
The best move by a Pope in my lifetime! My 1st parish priest was a good guy but also very wealthy. (conservative you might say)If we had a Pope like this 60 years ago it might have changed a lot of things!
Juan I am on the other side of this argument about whether the world can spend it's way back from epic deflationary depression but I think the US is the worst offender in terms of massive, prolonged excessive, corrupt and wasteful spending.
One of the best examples of this is Homeland Security. It was rushed into law 12 years ago and hasn't been questioned since. It can't be audited and nobody seems to know what it does. It provides lots of jobs but the FEMA response lately seems to indicate most of the $$$ are for corporate security. outlined here: http://www.tomdispatch.com/post/175655/tomgram%3A_kramer_and_hellman%2C_the_washington_creation_that_ate_your_lunch/#more
I would like to see you do a post like 10 top changes in military and foreign policy that would save us a trillion dollars. Also, I think the Italian Brillo Pad is right. Italy will be unable to pay anyone in 6 months.
That's my point Sheila. This is another election about nothing. The tv coverage shows that and the billions of dollars more spent this time are just a reflexion of how much richer they have become thru buying the process.
There is really such a thing as a slippery slope though and as Greece, Spain and Italy illustrate... beyond a certain point it just all falls down. Then change will begin.
Thanks for the great insights Juan. I don't think you can divorce politics from the economy. When it comes to importing wheat & fuel Egypt is hanging by a (Saudi) thread: the recent 1.5 B $ loan. If Morsi gets his way vs the military a bread crisis will break out quickly. Doesn't chaos guarantee military takeover?

Juan: This also might be worthy of a cartoon. Brennan may turn out to be the guy most responsible for the Benghazi tragedy due to a secret drone campaign operated out of the White House and kept from the CIA who had their own operation in Benghazi. The book will be released Feb 12th

bid for a Nobel Peace Prize claiming that he voted against both the Afghanistan war and the Iraq war?
