We have to admit that most of those we elect to Congress do not know what is going on within this country, much less so, a foreign country. And our own citizens are mislead by our mainstream media when it suits that media to 'play the game.'
Both our government/politicians and our "Christian" churches are to blame for American ignorance of Islam or any other religion that is not "christian."
The Israel 'problem' is a manifestation of that; members of Congress, including our own presidents, for some reason, are afraid to challenge any wrong doings of Israel. Rather the Congress continues to promote the official political line that "Israel is our friend", when in fact, except for the protection of the US, and the US selling of arms to Israel. , Israel could give a damn less about the US.
Regarding "The instinct of the United States has been to undermine secularism in the Middle East because it has been associated with socialism.", the United States government (both political parties) undermines its own citizens with its whines of "socialism" anytime anything is asked of it to secure health care or a fair wage or safe working conditions for all American workers.
And this is the same government (both political parties) that expect the American people to go to war in some foreign country to protect the financial interests of a US corporation that has moved its manufacturing to a foreign country.
In spite of this; "The United States does not have an automatic call on our resources. There is no mind-set that puts this country first."
[A Colgate-Palmolive executive. "The Nation"; 11/12/2001].
In other words, "(Our profits come first, the country second)."

It is unfortunate, and I wish I had the ability to change it, that the American people mainly get the views of the mainstream media, who do, whenever they so chose, occasionally, whenever they must, to establish a little credibility, spit out a little truth that can be no longer covered up.
That said, it is becoming more and more obvious to the American people, that our country does not prosecute its own war criminals; rather they end up working for corporations or foundations, or teaching at our universities.
(Imagine the rise in our international prestige if we prosecuted some (one) of our own top war criminals).
Donald Trump, or Hillary Clinton, our country is at a political and emotional low, with less and less faith in our government, and it seeming, baring a major miracle, Hillary Clinton will continue, or raise, our current wars policies and she, too, will be just another war criminal.
American soldiers will be sacrificed for wars not explained to the American people, or families whose loved ones were killed. (And innocent people whose countries we attack).
In the mean time;
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." ---- Hermann Goering
The seasons change, the winds they shift and veer;
The grass of yesteryear
Is dead; the birds depart, the groves decay:
Empires dissolve and peoples disappear;
Song passes not away.
Captains and conquerors leave a little dust,
And kings a dubious legend of their reign;
The swords of Caesars, they are less than rust:
The poet doth remain.
Sir William Walton; "Lachrimae Musarum"
I have often wondered why, in our public schools, we still continue to teach that we have this wonderful political system - when it is so corrupt.
Should we not teach our students just how corrupt it is? Would they not be then better prepared for the "real world?"
If a corrupt politician came into a public school classroom, and the teacher would get out of the way while the students asked the politician questions, the students would soon strip the politician so naked that he or she would quickly leave.
"Public servant", indeed.
Politics is not something you "do."
It is a lifestyle.
And should we not add Sibil Edmonds to the list of whistle blowers.
Regarding Bernie Sanders, the Democratic party leaders (Business as usual) had better start paying attention to the Democratic voters; they are not happy with the Democratic party in the same manner as Republicans are not happy with the Republican party. A lot of Democratic voters are going to simply sit this election out and not vote if Hillary Clinton gets the nod from the Democratic party.
Only an idiot will believe that he is "God's chosen." If that were true, all the rest of humanity are second class creations.
Israel's own history condemns their claim to Palestine.
Exodus 15:14; "The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina", meaning Palestine - the Palestinians were there first.
