I must say I am pessimistic about thedirection of a future the Libyan state.
Major figures in the National Transitional Council were ones implicated in the neoliberal reforms, when you add to that the NATO countries track record of economic policies in the developing world and the fact that Libya already seems to have a class of neoliberal kleptocrats it doesn't look good.
It seems that the things witch would be able to pressure the NTC into pursuing policy's which will benefit the majority of Libyans; trade unions or an organised mass movement (like the Norwegian social democratic party) don't exits in surfficient strength (I had heard of trade union forming in Benghazi but nothing since) to counter the prevailing winds of neoliberalism.
I hope I'm wrong.
I'm sure the story is all over the internet now
and hopefully Mubarak is even more toasty toast than he was the day before yesterday (melba toast?.
But if this is true does this mean the army will be in control during the transition to democracy and will they be managing the process in such a way as to exclude forces which threaten the top brass' interests, how seriously do we take their claim to be arbiters of national will.
the AngryArab is saying this is like Iran and the coup against Mossadegh
Also i would take issue with the assertion that the US was humiliated by Netanyahu over the settlements.
If the US didn't want more settlements they could have just have forbidden their funding.
I think I remember the last times Israel came anywhere near conflicting with us interests (selling hi-tech weapons to china or military contracts with Venezuela, they were slapped down in pretty humiliating fashion. (also its clear that Israel is the linchpin of US strategy to maintain control in the region but that's another debate)
many thanks for the insight and news etc
hi
this website is a great source of information for me
glad to have something to contribute.
The BBC morning news as of 8:00 UK time are reporting that the army (or at least tank crews on in the square) are "ready to fire on the pro mubarak thugs/demonstrators if they fire again on the anti mubarak forces" the source they site is a retired army general/instructor in army college who has spoken to the tank crews in the square. Dosen't seem 100% cast iron but interesting and if true mubarak is even more gone than he was yesterday.
thanks
