in Utah. not surprising when I lived in Cairo I noticing that so many people I met who worked for the USA's Dept of Defense were young Mormons, I finally asked, "what does the DoD recruit mormons?" "Actually, yes" was their answer. If you know anything about Mormonism there is a strong hierarchy, strong sense of loyalty, ethics, but an ethic that does not challenge authority nor is encouraged to think/ challenge certain belief systems.
And as far as surveillance goes, data mining and text mining is a huge part of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing with massive potential for growth.
Dr. Cole,
That is not the only parallels to be drawn, remember how Israel attacked activists and journalists on the Flotilla Aid Ship to Gaza May 31, 2010. Israeli thugs (whitewashed as commandoes) killed 9, injured many and CONFISCATED ALL media, cameras, computers, phones. Remember the activists were demonized, none of the cameras, computers or phones were returned. What was Israel hiding?
Mubarak and Netanyahoo have a lot in common. Both use force against activism and confiscate damage cameras, etc. Our allies in the Middle East have a lot in common.
It seems like the ambassador is talking out of both sides of his mouth, he does not agree with Colbert that Palestinians should go home yet he thinks Palestinians and Israelis can live peacefully. The wholes reason there is no peace is that the Israelis took the Palestinians homes.
The whole idea of sending everyone back home is an interesting (if even only theoretically) exercise and unveils the roots of the problem.
