Despite the governments mass spying programs, it is unable to prevent tragedies in society. Nor does it do something simple, like put a stop to fraudulent emails and fraudulent phone calls we all receive.
I worked with an Indian who complained about having to update his passport while visiting India, and pay a bribe to the official. I asked how much the bribe and fees cost him in US dollars. The answer was $30USD, and the process took about one hour. My passport has expired, and according to the government web site, it will cost me $110 to renew it. Plus it will take way more than one hour to complete the process.
On Jan. 18, you wrote that Rex Tillerson is committed to forever war in Syria. It sounds like Erdogan is supporting Tillerson's policy of forever war. I am sure that the defense contractors are very pleased with Erdogan.
In the corporate world, "synergy" is a euphemism for layoffs. Management will say that they found "synergy" between different groups in the organization, when they mean that they found various workers to be redundant.
1. Why has it taken so long to put together a successful coalition to stop all the killing?
2. Would Syria be better off if the U.S. backed rebels had won? Which outcome would result in less carnage: Assad or US backed rebels?
3. Assad is apparently guilty of war crimes, and I should despise him for it. Given that the war in Syria is largely caused by global warming, how should I feel about people who drive SUVs and leave a heavy carbon footprint? Who is responsible for more death and destruction?
The vote turnout was 54%, with Trump and Clinton each roughly getting 27% of the vote. Therefore, as usual the election was decided by the 46% that failed to participate.
I would argue that the FBI's involvement in the war on terror is a sixth example of the FBI working for right wing causes. An example of this is the FBI's entrapment of Mohamed Osman Mohamud in the 2010 Portland car bomb plot:
Gerrymandering is an important reason for the excess Republicans in Congress. A more important reason is voter suppression in Democratic leaning precincts, and computers counting the vote. As a software engineer, I do not trust computers to count votes. They are too easy to hack. Before computers took over our elections, exits polls were extremely accurate with the results; they no longer are because the vote is being stolen. Another very important issue in Detroit, and the rest of the nations economic decline, is our trade policies. We need to abandon the free trade treaties and re-establish tariffs to compensate for the different costs of labor between dometic and imported products.
Another Detroit decline issue was the poor quality of auto product that Detroit produced in the mid to late 70's, and their slow response to higher quality imports. I blame executive management for this failure.
According to the exit polls, Trump did not win Michigan.

Because of corruption, the second amendment of the constitution is more precious than the live of school children.

NPR became Pravda a long time ago.

I highly recommend Robert Altemeyer's book "The Authoritarians". It is a free book in pdf format. The following is a link to it:

Three questions:
1. Why has it taken so long to put together a successful coalition to stop all the killing?

"Why can’t the Democrats ever throw caution to the wind and be themselves?"
The problem is they are being themselves. The Democrats are that conservative.
