The scope of your scholarship continues to impress me, but I suppose it comes as no surprise given the scope of your humanity. I am rather certain you know the [far less than six degrees of Kevin Bacon] connections from Woody to Yip Harburg's "Buddy Can You Spare a Dime" and from there to "Over the Rainbow" -- perhaps material for future articles that we can be sure the course of Trumpism will dictate.
I must say that, upon opening my daily web reading to your page and seeing the title of this post, I was skeptical about a.) your venturing into that territory, and b.) my interest in whatever you might have to say about the topic.
Now, having not only read your article, but having read all the postings on the "History Buff" site which motivated the heart of your posting, I think it is outstanding. And, I am so impressed with your handling of the religious issues in both an historical and contemporary context that I am going right away to your home page and make the annual contribution which I have so far failed to do. How's that for my "putting my money where my mouth is" and for genuinely appreciating your thoughts and writings.
As to whether or not International Law matters, I would expect a full article from Juan making the point that Messrs. Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush have been noticeably absent as world travelers thanks in part to the threat of legal action under International Law if they set foot in certain free nations of Europe. The contrast with the welcome that Edward Snowden will receive if he seeks asylum is certainly worthy of comment. We Americans should hope that International Law may help us recover from the poor state to which we have descended by making believe that might is right in the world.
