The day will come when the people will rise. The people in this case being all the expatriates who are treated like second class citizens and whose rights are trampled upon every day with the support of Western governments. What is the UAE and all these other sheikhdoms is a crime covered up by western media. If people saw how expatriates are treated, especially the low skill workers, they would spit on those countries.
I think his big mistake was he traveled to Israel and blogged openly about it. If I recall he was quite critical of Iran at the same time. When I later read he had gone to Iran I thought he was mad for going to Iran after so very publicly blogging about having gone to Israel. Iran is not a country of laws like the US were your freedom of speech is determined by the judicial branch and the government has to convince the judicial branch. We are dealing with a bunch of mullah who have no logic and who have not seen the world to know what is out there. I feel really really bad that Hossein is in jail but frankly I feel he was a bit naive to go back to Iran after what he wrote on his blog about visiting Israel(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hossein_Derakhshan#Arrest_and_imprisonment_since_2008). If I was his friend I would have done everything to stop him from going...no I would have absolutely stopped him because anyone who knows anything about the clerics in Iran would tell you they are idiots who are ruining the country and Hossein's blog post is enough for them to through you into the dungeons. People have disappeared for far less.
If it wasn't for Iran today Lebanon would not exist. Israel would have taken it over a long time ago.
