Mixing and not differentiate between pretext and cause. No serious historian would say WWI would not happen if Princip didn't assassinate Ferdinand (charlatans would).
And by the way he is celebrated as a hero who paved the way for (that time dream of many Serbs, Croats, Slovenians, Muslims etc.) uniting south Slavs in one state i.e. creating Yugoslavia.
After reading this article people who know nothing about Turkey might think that Turkey is a normal country where (normal) opposition steers "controversies" just from time to time and on certain subjects, and otherwise it is constructive, cooperative and ready to work with government. For those who know something about Turkey such conclusion can't be further from the reality, since they know that there's no issue in this (or any) universe opposition would not try to turn in controversy. If anybody from the ruling party says that milk is white, you can expect vitriolic attacks on him/her and extensive argumentation in the opposition press (75% of media are staunchly anti-government) that milk is black.
This particular controversy about Pope's visit is nothing special, nothing crucial nor particularly interesting, at least not in Turkey. In another words here's business as usual. Why chief editor of otherwise quite good media is trying to present this as something special and hence the false picture is beyond me.
Turkey will become normal functioning (and not just electoral) democracy once opposition parties stop waiting and expecting non-political players to topple the government and deliver power on the plate to them (usually to coalition). That means they will have to realize that they have actually to start thinking about problems of citizens, society, economy, vision for the country etc. and not just throw spokes in the wheels of elected representatives.
However, that is mission impossible for kemalists (CHP) and fascists (MHP) (by the way attributes are exchangeable between those two parties, although one consider itself 'left' and other 'right') and Kurdish variation of combination of kemalism and fascism (HDP).
"Churchill’s plan failed because Mustafa Kamal Attaturk kept the British army from advancing, deploying against the British troops the machine gun."
This reduction of the campaign which lasted eight and half months is beyond the pale, since it was made by supposedly historian.
Commander of Turkish troops was Liman von Sanders. Mustafa Kemal was in one time commander of important sector of the front, but neither his part was decisive nor he evented usage of machine gun.
For example, a small problem with Davutoglu's account of events is that several TVs in Turkey broadcasted on Saturday eyewitness reporting seeing pair of jets flying low over sea, and return of one, some time later.
Story about second jet, allegedly going to look for the first one and was allegedly shoot at, was launched by Bulent Arinc on Sunday evening. Don't you find strange there was no mention of it during previous 48 hours?
"And Turkish radar tracked the plane’s last movements, over international waters."
That's what Turkey's officials are saying now, it was not version in circulation until Davutoglu's appearance on TV on Sunday.
Impression I get from here (Turkey) is that it was a stupid accident and that it took Turkey's officials almost 48 hours to decide (consulting intensively behind the curtain) what to do with it. Than they decided it was "an act of war", and constructed story accordingly.
EU offıcıals obvıously have better understandıng of Turkey than the author of thıs text.
I would not (after more than ten years living in Turkey) put 100% trust in integrity of any journalist, and especially not the bunch who are suspects in Ergenekon and similar cases. What author missed to explain is that the journalist in question are not jailed for their writing, but for suspicion of belonging to Ergenekon bunch. Yes, it looks bad arresting journos, but that profession cannot and should not provide imunity for criminal activities (and whoever knows anything about history of modern Turkey can't deny that it was often case that journos were part of plots).
In the end there are lot of vitriolic press against AK party government, and if thesis that Erdogan & comp. can't stand dissent they all would be in their crosshair. However that is not the case.
"millions who died because of this “hero”"

"It was shot down over international waters; they’ve located the wreck."
Yes, in Syrian waters 😀

It's not about taking sides, but Turkish version of the story 1) changed many times from Friday to Sunday.
2) is full of holes
