A legal causus belli? When was that ever reqired by Bushie or Obama? Both consider themselves above the law; free to ignore the Constitution.
Considering our supine Congress, your opposition to war with Iran means noting. Unless, of course, you and others take to the streets to demand respect for the law.
The army has the weapons and is firmly in charge. Unless it splits along ideological lines or because junior officers refuse to obey orders to deal firmly with the protesters, there is little chance that meaningful reform will occur.
Would Suleiman, his Cabinet of army officers and the army brass take kindly to a reform government that includes the MB?
No way.
If the protesters can't be split into ineffective groups in the near future the coup/crackdown will be vicious.
Murillo is correct. The protesters have wasted a week. The army is fed up with their inertia in the square and the mojo is now with the government.
Time has almost run out for the protesters. They have perhaps a day or two to start acting like revolutionaries.
Otherwise, Mubarak wins and the real b;oodbath begins.
With respect, the square may well be symbolic but IMO the protesters should get off their behinds and blanklets and go on to the main television station and the palace -- just to demonstrate that they're serious revolutionaries.
All of the reasons for our continued presence in Afghanistan that are advanced by our government are patently ridiculous. The government lies.
What are the real strategic reasons for our presence?
They may involve military encirclement of Iran, a pipeline for natural gas, a secret agreement with India, etc. But whatever the reason(s), if they are not known to the public there can be no informed discussion of war costs and withdrawl dates.
It can also be argued that the major obstacle to peace in the Holy Land is America's unconditional and never changing support for Israel's brutal occupation of Palestine.
With "our man in Kabul," COIN is a lost cause in Afghanistan. If we had a draft we'd have been out of there long ago. As it is the country seems to be able to stand the killed and maimed statistics. But he cost of years and years of unsuccessful COIN will finallly force us to withdraw. Why not honor Holbrook and do it now?
We badly need another leak. This time we require highly sensitive/confidential/clasified documents ala the Pentagon Papers. Only then will us common folk be able to discern the real reason(s) for our contined presence in Afghanistan and be able to weigh the terrible cost of blood and treasure against the goal.
Our government will never willingly part with this information .
Here's hoping there's someone in the bowels of DOD/CIA/DofS . . .
Representative Ron Paul is a voice crying in the wilderness. What does it matter that his views are correct? Ninety plus percent of the Congress and many members of the administration are in AIPAC's pocket. Ron Paul is virtually alone among members of the government and citizens of stature in standing up to this powerful lobby.
Israel wants an attack on Iran. Unfortunately, America does Israel's bidding.

Agree. It ain't over 'til it's over.

Israel. Washington, most European capitals, Suleiman and the Egyptian Army want stability.
The police crackdown is coming.

Successful revolutionaries take over government controlled newspapers. Thereafter, they take control of unfriendly television stations.
That way, they don't have to complain about rumors or government propaganda.

Fortunately, it can't happen here. Right?
But if it ever did it would be a lot worse, considering the rights afforded by the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
Then the question becomes what will our all-volunteer army do?
I hope the tear gas was not made in America.

Best wishes for a joyous Thanksgiving to Professor Cole and all who read his informative blog.
