A typically on-target and entertainingly written post. Only one correction- Suharto -not Sukarno, the president deposed by the former- carried out the genocide against leftists.
"Daesh is on its last legs as a territorial state, now holding only a bit of West Aleppo and some towns of about 100,000 in northern Iraq..."
Assume you mean West Mosul.
As both a devoted reader of IC and an individual who closely follows Pakistani news, I am strongly curious about Dr. Cole's take on Tasir's killing with regard to Pakistan's long term future. Specifically, I would like to know:
(1) if Dr. Cole agrees with the interpretation widespread in the American (and liberal Pakistani) press that the murder proves that Pakistan's traditionally moderate and pluralistic society is in serious danger of being extinguished by the intolerant, pro-blasphemy law views of fanatics.
(2) Does he believe that the support of Tasir's murder by the Jamaat e Ahle Sunnat indicates that Barelvis are becoming aligned with the fanatics' ideology?
(3) Does he believe that the killing of such a prominent politician means that Pakistan is destined to become another Somalia and never fulfill Jinnah's vision of a progressive Muslim nation?
I look forward to a response from the author of this always insightful blog!
