Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It is so sad that the cuneiform tablets were destroyed. Do we even have a pictorial record of them? A number of years ago, when I first read about their preservation I remember thinking 'what a remarkable treasure'. It is a real tragedy that they are gone.
You forgot to mention that he suggest
ed developing a national list of those individuals who had been or were being treated for emotional disturbance.
(I wonder if he would qualify for the list?)
A few days before the election I was talking with a woman who assured me that Fox News always is reliable because "it must tell the truth" as compared to all the other media outlets. She knew absolutely this was accurate. How does Fox manage to convince people like this? Amazing!
75 countries, huh! I had no idea, but somehow I am not surprised. At least Romney, through this speech, has confirmed that he is one of the M&M (money and munitions) crowd.
Related to he above remarks is the interview that Ira Flatow had yesterday on Science Friday in which it was revealed that two viruses that have recently occurred in greater numbers cannot be researched as funding was cut off by our current Congress.
It is 7:00 am and I just turned off the radio. The NPR station had reported actions taken at several points in the country to remove Muslims from holding positions in public institutions and of legislation being proposed at various state levels to prohibit sharia law. This is how it begins. This is how we confined dark-skinned people to certain areas of the city. This is how we interred Japanese-Americans to defined and barren geographical areas.
If NPR gave 2, maybe 3 minutes to the topic today, by November it will be one of the leading topics of national discussion leading up to the election. We will be well on our way to war internally and abroad.
All this background rumble going on while Romney and his supporters are decrying their belief that Obama doesn't know how to be an American. I'm afraid I can see where this campaign is heading.
After all the furor of this latest shooting dies down, we will return to the U.S. number one news story 'who will be our next President?'. As if it mattered! Congress is owned by the M&M crowd; e.g. Money and Munitions. I'd like to think we could change it, but I've heard this story so many times over my 90 years...I don't think it will happen.
And these same unidentified corporations are running the pony show called the Presidential race just to keep us distracted from anything that really matters.
Juan, if you have time read Tony Judt's last book "Thinking the Twentieth Century" or at least the last chapter, in which through conversation he and Tmothy Snyder reflect on events that brought the U.S. to the current "naive and immature" position you describe here.
I think that new representatives will be just as powerless as the present Congress. Big Oil needs to be convinced that it can be just as powerful if it is also Big Solar, Big Turbine, etc.
Juan,
What role is Israel expecting to play in this situation? I am thinking not only of Israel/Egypt but also Israel/Turkey relationships. And what response do you believe the Obama administration is apt to make?

Global warming is here and this literate Mom cites environmental evidence common to anyone. Adaptation is occurring; better to observe and adapt as well than see which politician wins the verbal battle.

It is amazing to me that the success, or lack of, is focused on the number of people killed. It is an important number, of course, but the individuals who are injured are the important measure of the drain on resources of all kinds--food, housing, medical, rehabilitative--on the community. It needs to be better understood.
I go way back to the days of Ernie Pyle and Daniel Shore when we assumed that part of our responsibility as citizens was to know and understand about our (U.S.) relationships with the rest of the world e.g. how we fit in. I get BBC news at 5 am and that is the only time I hear any mention of items such as you cited above. For more detail I have to go to the Internet and other papers, such as Aljazeera, Dawn, Le Monde, etc. It's sad....more than that, it's scary.
Juan, Thank you so much for doing this. I go to the Univ. of Texas Library, which is a wonderful resource, but your informed site is (will be an even better one.

We can't do this again!
Each day I desire a sense of what is going on in the world, including the U.S., so I check the BBC and Al Jazeera. I find it a good use of my time.

That's generous of you, Juan. But me?--I think he has a lousy memory coupled with not knowing what he's talking about most of the time.

He would have appreciated the irony!
