While it's most-certainly not his party, I think the point made in the piece is that they made the decision to back him and thereby shackle themselves to his whimsy.
The only thing that could redeem the GOP is for reasonably-minded souls to break ranks and at least create a 50/50 set of caucuses in the Senate.
At least then in 2, 4, 6, 8 years they can say, "See, we're not all of us out of touch," and maintain a presence.
