The U.S. didn't want to send weapons to the "wrong" rebels in Syria, but somehow they ended up in the hands of ISIS. But that was okay because they were fighting Assad. But now that they are attacking the friends of Iran in Baghdad, that's not so okay. What it all boils down to is that in the Middle East, "the enemy of my enemy is my enemy."
Obama miscalculated when he judged the stability and strength of the Iraqi regime. He is making the same mistake in Afghanistan. But the reality of it is that there is only one country the U.S. has to ensure does not fall into the hands of militant Islamists... Pakistan. If that happens... game over.
Creating a "crisis" and then addressing it with new resources obtained from "outraged" observers is a time-honored political ploy. The State will step in and another Detroit problem is solved. Of course, the solution has nothing to do with actually solving the problem. It simply means the problem is pushed to others.
It seems that a few degrees one way or another is hardly the Apocalypse or Armageddon with regard to life on this planet. An asteroid, perhaps. A super-volcano, possibly. A hyper solar flare, maybe. A little CO2 and a few degrees, not so much.
I realize that there is a lot of government research money riding on hyperbole, but maybe some scientific integrity could be thrown in.
