I can see why he had to take Victorian England statistics. The worst disaster in the UK was the Tanchwa Senghennydd in 1913 and bares alot of resemblances to the Soma disaster he wouldn't want to bring that one up.
Nice article although I have to point out that that Avery Brooks was the first lead African-American captain in a Star Trek series although of Deep Space Nine and Worf was one of his officers.

According to The Times he also managed to call the Labour leader 'Mr Leader' because he had forgotten his name.
