I'd go ahead and throw in the meeting in the Oval Office with the Russian ambassador in which the US press was not invited and foreign intelligence was leaked. The one where Putin himself is kindly offering a record of the Oval Office conversation. When we have to rely on Putin to provide a record, that gives him leverage over Trump right there. Trump is compromised, hands down.
I love what Bernie has to say. I thought Guns and Israel were the two points where we disagreed.. but what he's saying about Israel sounds right to me! Maybe I need to review his gun policy more closely. Maybe Bernie is right on everything. This is our chance to have a great leader who will turn this country in the right direction. Please, please, let us not blow it.
Thank God for Juan Cole. I'm actually a buddhist, but I've learned so much from reading your blog over the years. Especially with all of the negativity in the world today, your posts are always sane, reasonable and written in a spirit that seeks the truth. I don't know where else to get the perspectives I get on this site. I truly rely on it to better understand what's going on when the rest of the news seems like just so much noise. (You and Krugman provide this function, actually, but on different topics : )
'President Barack Obama decided to ignore these officers’ violations of the law, to “look forward as opposed to backwards.” I disagree.'
This sums up my #1 issue with Obama. I hoped. I did have hope... that we'd clean up the mess at some point. As a constitutional scholar, Obama knew the law had been broken. War Crimes were committed and he knew it. He didn't have the courage to bring them to justice, however, and I can never forgive him for letting this infection fester for 8 more years. Bush et al are clearly guilty and until they are held accountable we are in serious danger of repeating these mistakes and many others in the future.
I appreciated this article very much. I think the Black Lives Matter movement will make Bernie stronger - because he will be forced to develop part of his platform and address racial injustice head on -- but also because if he's successful in doing so, he has the chance to be the champion of this cause. By letting Black Lives Matter speak and then responding to them with thoughtful policy suggestions, he stands to add them to his base. A quick search suggests that 12% of the voting population is black. If he can become recognized as the politician who cares about their well-being (which I truly believe he does) then he stands to not only survive their disruptions... but get a great number of votes!! Democracy.. hey.. look at that!
YES !!! This is the big one missing from the list. I couldn't agree more. As a constitutional scholar, Obama must have know how blatantly Bush broke the law over and over -- especially starting a war of choice based on lies -- and ... crickets. "Not the time to look back.." he said. BS. When is the time?? WHEN???
