Muslims from African countries I daresay have little in common with Muslims from Indonesia, apart from their religion. In the same way that Jews do not represent an ethnicity.
Just a suggestion Mr. Phud, that you arrange to take a trip to Israel and meet some of the "soft" Jews living in the West Bank settlements. Go to Hebron or Itamar near Nablus. And then go to Ramallah and meet some of the educated Palestinians.
Exactly what I was thinking, Frank Johnson, as I read the article. The U.S. and the Vatican are both very adept with their Hypocrisy. How dare they talk about "human rights" and criticize any country?
I'm pretty sure, Ginnette, that the Muslims in that assembly were equally as active as the Christians in trying to love and build bridges with "the other". After all, Jesus Christ is one of the prophets in Islam and his teachings are part of the everyday lifestyle of Muslims. God=Allah
I am a Canadian man aged nearly 67, raised as a Christian, presently living in a town in central Morocco, a completely Muslim country. While I applaud what the people in that Memphis community have done, it is only part of the process toward real understanding. Next comes developing personal friendships and having shared experiences. Living in Morocco, surrounded every day as I am by Muslims, I can tell you that it's very pleasant being here. There are many differences of course, but we have much more in common as humans.
I've been reading an article by Michael Hudson "Obama's Greatest Betrayal
The Coming Sell-Out to the Super Rich and What It Means for the Rest of Us" http://www.counterpunch.com/hudson11152010.html
and only got to the end of the 5th paragraph where I found something I think you may find interesting, but most likely you already knew. Well, duh, I didn't know that Obama’s Senate mentor was Joe Lieberman. Took my breath away just a bit.
Juan Cole: "To think of this another way, President Obama is in danger of losing control of his South Asian foreign policy agenda to India, its Republican supporters in the House, and the military-industrial complex."
In all of this amazing article, which just had my brain spinning, never once is Israel mentioned. Looking at the above quote, I cannot help thinking that Israel is also a part of this equation, given its close relationship with India and with the new Republican American Congress .
Finally, after reading all the comments so far, I come upon DOODAHMAN who has spoken the words that have been on my mind ever since I read the article yesterday.
Obama, prostituting himself to his corporate "masters".
Juan, thanks for this article. Your words are especially appreciated !
Regarding the 1st video, I got this message (since I am viewing from Morocco):
"This video contains content from ABC Soapnet, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
However, this one worked for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n94pOhdnDJg
I watched the video on YouTube and almost wish I had not. Most of the comments are shockingly on the side of the driver, and the kids are spoken of as "sand niggers" and other dehumanizing terms. Israelis and their supporters are really a piece of work!

It is just loaded with comments, and I wanted to add a voice of reason. Thanks for publishing it.

One idea, which I hope is outrageous, is that not so long ago it was revealed by Wikileaks that the Pakistani ISI was purportedly involved in supporting the Afghanistan "Taliban" resistance fighters. Could this be a factor in donors' reticence?
I have a quandary that I hope someone here will help me with. In Baghdad I have a good friend that I have been in communication with online for about 7 years. He is a Muslim with mixed Sunni-Shiite parents, and not particularly religious. Education and personal advancement have been his focus. At present he is employed as a Civil Engineer with an American company located in al-Basrah, but he has longer range plans to live and work in the United States. In view of recent events enunciated in this column and elsewhere, what do you think I should advise him to do; take a risk and follow through with his plans, or stay where he is close to his family and friends in Iraq?
Good thinking, Janine!
Please read my comment above @ 8:11 am.
We must not allow ignorance and violence to prevail. Knowledgeable people need to stand up and protect Muslims, 99% of whom are innocent.
From the start of reading this article, I found myself wanting to yell at Franklin Graham: "So what, if Barack Obama were a Muslim?", which he is not of course. The Muslims I happened to know during my life in Canada, almost without exception, were fine and admirable people. As a man in my late '50s, I lived and worked in the West Bank city of Nablus for more than two years and presently I live in a town in Morocco. I have never felt in danger personally, and rarely am I questioned on the subject of religion; I am well-liked due to my behaviour. Demonization of Islam and Muslims is a crime against a very large segment of humanity, and we all know who the perpetrators are. Let us rebel against this.

Juan, I think you may want to change the link to your Democracy Now! interview to this:

The link presently gives the whole program, not only your segment.

Happy New Year, Juan. 2011 promises to be a very "interesting" year...and we will depend on you more than ever!

All joking aside, guys, I know you know it's Afghanistan. I had to find a map and compare.

Your thoughts, Juan?
Finally, after reading all the comments so far, I come upon DOODAHMAN who has spoken the words that have been on my mind ever since I read the article yesterday.
Obama, prostituting himself to his corporate "masters".
That's why he consistently put the word "defense" in quotation marks.
I read that PressTV article too, but when I checked back a short time later it had been deleted.

I think you meant to write "Tel Aviv"?
Juan, I have taken the liberty of copying this:

Thanks; I stumbled at that part too. Your correction is perfect.
