'In 1979 Iran made its Islamic revolution against the corrupt megalomaniac Mohammad Reza Shah. Later in that year, fanatics took US embassy personnel hostage.'
For perspective, remember that the US had supported the Shah's military actions against Kurds & farmers who resisted forced emptying the land to supply more factory workers in the early 1960's. This was also where the CIA tested some of the weapons & tactics used later in Viet Nam. Blowback was not improbable....
It’s the same with terrorists: they’re only bad if they’re someone else’s terrorists; our terrorists are fine, upstanding people: cf. Nicaraguan Contras, & Al Qaida in Libya & Syria.
Conspicuously missing is the hideous case of Canadian Meher Arar, kidnapped in transit by the USA & delivered for torture to Syria, a Crime against Humanity for which the US refuses to take responsibility, even going to the extent of refusing the wholly cleared Arar from entering the US to pursue criminal charges against the agencies involved.
Back up just a minute: Where did the USA get the idea it ‘had’ the Middle East in the first place? This is the wrong language in which to be thinking, & it has certainly expedited these problems.

“The FBI...has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigation,...’ (emphasis added).
Oh, indeed? & just what are those other cases? Beyond despicable. An excellent comparison by Schwartz, too.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me...& we thought the East German VOPOs were bad.
