The events described, accurately I think, the Manicheaist nature of what Civilization is experiencing during the recent decades. The empathy expected from the humanitarian impulse is lacking even more so as the great mass of us who could otherwise act to alleviate the misery of "others", find ourselves mindful of the struggle to prevent said miseries being the inevitable lot of our children.
I agree with pr above, that I found relief that the author can see some avenues of hope. We will all make it, or we won't. The effort will matter. Somehow.
