This is basic economics. (Monopolistic competition actually governs most economic activity. Though they won't tell you that on TV news.)
In the US, despite the massive amounts of blowback, the US can keep doing this crap for a very long time, because until it blows back all the way to Washington DC, it doesn't stop them from repeating the same errors.
Soooo the fascinating part of this is that Saudi Arabia is adopting the same idiotic strategy. Saudi Arabia is extremely fragile to start with, and it's deploying this strategy on its *neighbors*. How hard is it to march on Riyadh, anyway?... or maybe the Saudi military depots and bases are easier targets (Riyadh is in the middle of a desert).
