Mitt Romney, George Marshall, and Israel-Palestine

General Marshall vehemently opposed recognizing Israel and instead favored U.N. trusteeship after British withdrawal slated for midnight, the 14th of May, 1948. As reported in a fascinating historical snippet by the late Richard Holbrooke, who helped organize presidential adviser Clark Clifford's papers for a co-authored memoir, then-President Harry Truman overruled George Marshall. See note and corrections made by changing the wording of Jewish state to the State of Israel. Signed by Harry Truman.

Arab-Israeli Strategic Balance CSIS report 2011 [pdf link]

I now understand why Russian arms deliveries to Syria have been for “outstanding” orders (years of backlog). I do not understand why Israel isn’t more concerned of major US weapons and aircraft deliveries to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Gulf states. Due to absence of a peace deal with the Palestinians, the unrest with neighbours will only increase exponentially with movement of arms into the region. Or will Israel fend off these upcoming military regional powers with their nuclear deterrent? Interesting development in the Sunni-Shia divide and why western powers are eager to support so-called opposition forces to overthrow Assad … any day now since 12 months ago!

  • Open Source Center Reports from Sept. 12 on Libya Consulate Attack Support Crowd Protests
    • Oui 10/25/2012 at 4:55 am

I found this witness account credible plus the fact the attack came in two waves, the second after US personnel returned. First attack started between 9 and 9:30pm and second deadly attack around 2am, two hours after midnight! I find it odd to speak of “large protests” at the gate. I have listened to the interior minister and head of state Magarief and find them not credible about the facts. Moreover, the people of Benghazi knew where to put the blame as we saw Ansar al-Sharia HQ attacked by a large protesting group of Libyans. In the analysis of who were present as security at the temporary location of the US consulate: an unarmed group of Blue Mountain Libya (two persons executed) and from the 17th February Martyrs Brigade. Their lives were spared. The Ansar al-Sharia militia had the responsibilty for security of the local Al-Jalaa hospital.

Administration media problems increased with the intelligence talking points handed to Susan Rice before her presentation on Meet the Press that were faulty. Sensitive letters found by WP reporter on US Consulate grounds [pdf – 8Mb].

Media reports in the early hours mixed the film protests at the US embassies in Tunesia and Cairo with the Libyan attack, more often calling the US consulate in Benghazi an embassy. Major difference is the assumption a US embassy has protective walls, windows and a secure perimeter. Those were not present in the Benghazi location in a villa park. Reports on a Benghazi related website.

Murky Matters. Do you know a better way to illustrate how a lame Peter King, chairman Committee on Homeland Security, base his Iran policy on an interview with “CIA asset” Reza Kahlili. Watch the video interview on his blog. Head hurts everytime King argues.

Why did the US media fall for this ridiculous article published by WND?

A Time to Betray, a book title well chosen by author Reza Kahlili. IMO a bogus story to delegitimize President Obama’s Iran policy, see witness statement by Hamid Reza Zakeri. In Kahili’s biography he states "working for Congress." Must be a job in the staff for Issa and King.

    • Oui 10/22/2012 at 6:49 pm

Prof. Cole, you have touched on many aspects about Iran, yet in such a nutshell version one can only do injustice to a great nation. What would the region look like if US policy would have opted for friendship with the Iranians and distanced itself from the Saudi Kingdom? I sure would appreciate your vision on such a development. Basically, how would the world have changed with a second term for the Carter presidency?

President Obama is not loved by the Netanyahu regime and the Israeli people. Nice to have one Israeli take a different stance - former Mossad chief Halevy urges dialogue with Iran, calls Obama policy 'brave'.

Unraveled highly sophisticated telecom espionage ring set up by the Israeli Mossad
I could continue with more factions in the Lebanon power game, like Sunni jihadists spilling over across borders. Perhaps Saad and Wissam overplayed their hand in antagonizing the Syrians lately – see also one of many car bomb attacks in Damascus and Aleppo. Violence begets violence and the feelings of revenge can last for generations.

    • Oui 10/20/2012 at 5:31 am

In a televised interview with CNN, Saad Hariri spoke from his hometown Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Specifically asked who had the capability in Lebanon to organize such a carbomb attack, Saad did not give an answer. Later in the program a Lebanese did answer the question and quickly named five political (militant) organizations. Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan have provided safe havens for foreign militants crossing the border with arms, munition and anti-tank grenades. When there were many ugly and devastating car bomb attacks in Damascus and Aleppo, the US ambassador to the UN blocked an attempt to discuss a resolution condemning these acts. The region is on fire and the western powers including and especially the US have exacerbated the violence by advocating a violent overthrow of the Assad regime. Two permanent members of the Security Council have been clear a regime change by military action was not acceptable. Turkey, France, U.S. and GCC nations are responsible for this policy and led to the failure of the UN mission by Kofi Annan. There are 32,000 deaths (militants, civilians and Assad forces) and as I understand 28,000 persons have gone missing according to Syrian activists group Avaaz. The region is on fire. Turkey may be inclined to support a temporary cease-fire during the Eid al-Adha next week. Let’s hope wisdom and humanity prevails after 19 months of destruction.

Red Lines or Nethanyahu’s Red Area

I don’t see mentioned Nethanyahu’s red line is NO ENRICHMENT whatsoever by Iran. Obama has stated he cannot prohibit a nuclear program for civilian use. Current negotiations reflect an acceptance of Iran’s nuclear rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iran is signatory to the NPT, Israel is not.

      US Assets, Really?

US funds in the past bought Egypt’s military establishment, even this year came with strings attached. It seems most generals have (been) retired. Morsi and the MB have received billions from Qatar and Saudi Arabia and the IMF will offer support. It’s clear Morsi seeks allies closer to home with better embrace by the Egyptians themselves.

His United States citizenship was also obtained by fraudulently by claiming to be a Mexican farm worker. In fact a litany of stories on embezzlement and fraud can be tracked on Eiad.

      The killing fields of Rafah

(Haaretz) - The BBC broadcast a program titled "When the killing is easy" about the killing of British TV cameraman James Miller, the death of International Solidarity Movement volunteer Rachel Corrie under a bulldozer, and the shooting of ISM peace activist Tom Hurndall, who has been rendered a vegetable by his injuries. All three incidents happened within a few weeks in Rafah.

Both British citizens got justice through political pressure from FM secretary Jack Straw. US State Department was negligent by withholding support for its citizen Rachel Corrie.

      Persian Gulf of Tonkin Incident

Undoubtedly Secretary Robert Gates played a role. The press realease by Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff of NAVCENT/ 5th Fleet came just as President George W Bush was about to leave on a Middle East trip aimed in part at rallying Arab states to join the United States in an anti-Iran coalition. Robert M. Gates announced on April 24, 2008 the nomination of Rear Adm. William E. Gortney as the new commander for U.S. Naval Forces, Central Command and Commander, 5th Fleet. Coincidence? Cosgriff retired from the Navy in July 2008.
