It worked for 70 years but it looks as if it's not going to work for another 70. Polls show that younger Americans do not have any particular affection for Israel and their actions against Palestinians. Much like they apparently don't really care if someone is gay or not.
I guess all my friends and acquaintances have heeded my advice since I've been adamant about contributing to and supporting Democratic candidates if only to stop the Republicans from gaining a Senate majority this year. On the other hand, I have to say that I'm delighted that the dead-on-arrival-propaganda-that-is-the-impeachment-tsumani currently sweeping the wight wing is raking in millions for Democrats. Way to go right wing!!
Good news. But think just how much more advanced would we be if for thirty years we had actually developed EV's? To say nothing of the destruction of GM's electric vehicle back in the 1990's? Same goes for alternative energy sources.
Not sure why this article is news or even controversial. Are Americans so uninformed about the Middle East (apparently the Bush Administration was) that they honestly don't understand the Palestinian situation or Israel's military "accretion" of Palestinian territory since the Balfour Declaration? Safe to say that since "Hamas" will not recognize the state of Israel the "accretions" are likely to continue until the green on the maps disappears.
"It should be fairly obvious that if you take adolescents into the middle of the Palestinian West Bank and steal Palestinian land and build houses on it and shoot at Palestinians trying to harvest their crops nearby and bulldoze down their homes or dig tube wells so deep as to cause the Palestinian wells to run dry– if you engage in this settler-colonial enterprise, then you are exposing those adolescents you drag with you into it to danger."
I guess the question is, when will Israel turn the illegally occupied West Bank over to it's rightful occupants?
I recall reading a piece by an economist whose name I don't recall about a year after the 2008 collapse and he predicted that since Wall Street could no longer slice and dice mortgage securities they would turn to oil commodity futures to play with. I have no idea if this is indeed part of the reason why gas prices have remained so high for so many years now even when production costs have declined and our imports have declined as well.
Thank you for the illuminating article. There is no question that Americans know very little about the Middle East nor the history of the region. I have both lived and worked in Middle Eastern countries, have many friends from the area and I have to say I was very disturbed over the apparent ignorance of so many in the Bush Administration who were so enthusiastic about invading both Iraq and Afghanistan. What's happening in Iraq - in fact what's happened - was entirely predictable given even a modicum of knowledge about the country.
Truly excellent! As a former 1960's die hard liberal who was clubbed and tear gassed for standing up for what I believe - successfully, but the way, until business, money and conservatives hijacked our country - I couldn't agree with you more.
All of the aforementioned nations are in transition of one sort or another. I think the situation in Egypt is illuminating. When Morsi won the first free elections in Egypt with a not all that impressive majority of the voters, his administration proceeded to implement Sharia law which - as events have proven - the majority of Egyptians did not accept that path thus the situation that the country finds itself in currently. You can rail against the military's influence in Sisi's election and his rule, but the Morsi alternative is not one the Egyptian people wanted nor is it one the US would have been happy with.
One aspect of our current political situation is how often conservatives seem to have no idea of history - the American or the world variety. Take the bashing of the EPA right wingers are engaged in. They don't seem to remember or are too lazy to do the research about how effective the EPA has been in cleaning up our lakes and rivers, reducing airborne pollution, forcing the clean up of hazardous land fills, eliminating acid rain, among a host of other beneficial effects.
Is it any wonder that Americans today have no idea how many Muslims fought on the Allies side in WWII?
It's unfortunate that here in America we have such a warped view of freedom of speech unlike in many other counters where such blatant demagoguery would be subject to censure, fine and possible civil lawsuits. I seem to recall reading the day after Bergdahl was released that his father grew his beard in support of his son (vowing not to shave until he was released) and learned Pashtun (which, by the way, is not the language of the Taliban but spoken by all Pashtun people) in order to be able to communicate with folks involved in negotiating for his son's release. That Fox can twist what were demonstrations of love and support for a son into terrorist sympathies is really bend the pale.
To Jack: Yes but the deaths, according to what I've read, occurred two to six months after Bergdahl deserted. Not sure that under these circumstances their deaths can be attributed to him. On the other hand, all the "news" is very sketchy. One thing, now that he is released I assume he could be court martialed for desertion.
Agree with you. Look at how our decades of "involvement" behind the scenes in Latin America have turned out. An entire continent that we've lost. And the US criticized Chavez as a Communist because for the first time in that country's abysmal political history poor folks actually had a say in their governance? Unbelievable!
Americans have no idea what's happening in the Muslim world. They don't even realize they don't get it that Sisi takeover was against the fundamentalist direction that Morsi was taking in Egypt. Used to watch Al Jazeera when I was overseas to get a better picture of what was going on in the Muslim world. Unfortunately Al Jazeera America is some dumbed down version designed for the illiterate American public.

That pretty much sums it all up.

Anyone with any facts on this?
Not to state the obvious, but I've always had the impression that Cantor is an arrogant prick. Maybe folks got tired.

Same situation with Chavez.
A poignant reminder and a fitting tribute.

I wonder how she classifies Timothy McVeigh? Disgruntled patriot maybe? American Freedom Fighter?
Love your "if English was good enough for Jesus Christ" remark. Wish I'd thought of it

Well there you go. Even the Pope is anti-Israel. If he really does this you can bet that there will be a strong Israeli backlash.

I'm seeing a fantastic opportunity for our local graffiti artists to strut their stuff!
