Agreed, Peter Tracy.
I'm actually hoping the GOP trounces the Deal so that Iran can play the I Told You So card and re-open negotiations, this time with ALL options on the table, where ALL means exposing and dismantling Israel's nuclear program.
"Of course, the initiative was largely a political and public opinion ploy, but it was highly instructive."
That's not the way Richard Butler tells it. Butler negotiated the 1995 extension of the NPT; Iran, Egypt, KSA & al were around his dining table when the promise -- PROMISE -- was made that if the Arab and Islamic states would agree to extend NPT, then a conference would be convened to discuss a nuclear free zone in the region.
The great task of the American people is to reexamine their complicity in this enormous crime, and America's relationship with Israel, with thorough-going honesty and the determination to change, but without vindictiveness toward those who got the US into this situation.
I think the American people are capable of that process -- of Truth and Reconciliation.
"Without vindictiveness" does not and must not mean "without consequences." We are a people governed by rule of law, and wrongdoers should be prosecuted, judged, and, upon conviction, punished very, very harshly.

At least we have calmed the anxieties of those who were concerned that USA was a Christian nation.
When John Kerry was presidential candidate, the Catholic church refused him communion because of his political position on abortion.
Will the Catholic church condemn Rick Santorum for calling for, and expressing delight in, the assassination of innocent civilians?
