The Israelis don't want peace. They are annexing more and more of historic Palestine while oppressing the indigenous population into total capitulation. See the terms offered at Taba.
It has been 48 years since the 1967 war. What makes you think the Israelis have ever genuinely wanted peace?
Perhaps this is a little off the point of the legal issues, but why is BDS only directed towards businesses in the West Bank? Are the troops only from West Bank Settlements? Is the money for Settlement construction and subsidies from the West Bank Administration? Are the West Bank resources utilized solely for West Bank Israelis?
Clearly not. So why shouldn't BDS target all Israeli firms?
An excellent article Mr. Thompson with the exception of one naive premise, that the West and the US in particular actually desires democratic regimes leading oil rich nations.
As you point out, democracies tend to be responsible to the people it governs. It is by definition rule by consent. Tyrannies are focused centers of power. These focal points serve their own interests and can be controlled from the outside, either by carrot or stick, or both, and serve exterior powers much more in the latter's interest.
It is cheaper to make a dictator and his cast of cronies rich than it is to pay market prices for resources to democratic governments.
“The Dahiya Doctrine is central to these operations and refers to Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on Lebanon in 2006. Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot said that this would be applied elsewhere:
‘What happened in the Dahiya quarter of Beirut in 2006 will happen in every village from which Israel is fired on. […] We will apply disproportionate force on it and cause great damage and destruction there. From our standpoint, these are not civilian villages, they are military bases.’ ” http://tinyurl.com/m6tawqd
Another excellent piece Mr. Cole. Only one correction. The Zionist ethnic cleansing began in 1947, clearing out half the Palestinian population and half the villages and cities before the first shot of the Israeli War of Independence.
Purists like me have the power to control the Presidency? That's awesome! We didn't know we could control the lone superpower.
And here I thought Clinton's loss and the Democrats shellacking was due to, well, Clinton and the Democratic Party.

The only solution is supporting representative governments, draining extremists of the support of oppressed people and doing the right thing.
