Middle East Conflicts on Campus

Scott Jaschik discussed the disputes on college campuses, especially UC-Irvine, over the Middle East. Yours truly makes a cameo appearance, as does the petition I started to defend John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt from scurrilous charges of bigotry.

I don't actually think things are as heated on most campuses over these issues as they appear to be at UC Irvine. Universities are full of people who like to discuss issues civilly, and most of the problems that do occur come from outsiders who are trying to score political points.

A good part of the viciousness of the terms of debate at UC Irvine are likely due to the viciousness of the attacks of critics of Israeli policy by the Israel Lobby as very well described in Mearsheimer and Walt's paper. Live by the sword, die by the sword. I am reminded of how many neocons, e.g., David Horowitz and William Kristol, excoriated the 60s left for its attacks on campus speakers and got hugely condemnatory about the hypocrisy of these otherwise advocates of freedom. The neocon right is treating those who disagree with them in very similar fashion. What's that saying about "Power corrupting..."? Hmmmmm.
