Monsters on Television

Paul Krugman, among my favorite political commentators, has spoken forthrightly of how during the past few years we have had "monsters" in office, naming Tom Delay, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. He complains that until recently, if an observer simply called them what they are, he or she was termed "shrill." (h/t Daily Kos).

I could not agree more. But I'd like to take this discussion out of the realm of commentary and into that of action.

It is unacceptable that television news brings Tom Delay and Karl Rove on as bona fide political commentators, when both are criminals. The same thing goes for Oliver North. Delay has been indicted on corruption charges and had to step down from his seat in Congress. Rove led a campaign to have the press out a covert CIA operative who was attempting to stop Iranian nuclear proliferation, essentially blowing her cover and that of her contacts to Tehran (i.e. he is a traitor).

There was a time when individuals so tainted with crime made themselves unacceptable in polite society, including on television.

Instead, these monsters are being given air time. CNN brought Delay on to accuse Barack Obama of being a "Marxist." To have that shameless embezzler given a platform to smear an honorable man just made my blood boil.

Folks, we need an organization that can blanket the corporate media with emails of complaint every time they bring on a criminal and parade him as a legitimate commentator. If they blow us off, it would be time to get up some advertiser boycotts.

This rehabilitation-by-media of criminals is one way the country keeps being shifted to the right every time the people find their voice. The Right gives a comfy perch on television to looney embezzlers and burglars and then wages campaigns with big money behind them to discredit even centrist leaders not in their back pockets.

I do not advocate criminalizing politics. I am not saying anything glib, such that all Bush administration figures are ipso facto criminals and should be denied a public voice. The United States government is a large bureaucracy and lots of civil servants and military have to serve whatever administration the public votes in. There are and were people on Bush's National Security Council, e.g., who are honorable and trying to do their best by the United States.

All that I am saying is that where someone has to resign in disgrace and is actually indicted on serious corruption charges, like Delay, that should make that individual poison to television news! The Rove case is a little trickier, since he has not been indicted. But the Fitzgerald investigation showed that he tried to do something that was technically illegal. Presidential pardons also muddy these waters. Elliot Abrams lied to Congress over the Iran-Contra affair, but was pardoned by Bush senior and then actually let onto the National Security Council by W.! But a responsible citizen watchdog group could surely come up with a fair gauge of gross criminal or ethics violations that should put the individual out of the business of commenting on daily politics to millions of viewers.

Note that corporate media is much more careful about sexual scandal than it is about other kinds of crime. A politician or public figure so much as accused of sexual impropriety is often considered off limits (CNN's Aaron Brown once sidelined Scott Ritter that way, over a date gone bad). Presumably this caution derives in part from fear of the emails they would get, and threats of advertiser boycotts, from the religious Right.

Liberals have let themselves be walked all over by the Right, which is mostly much better funded and organized than the American Left, for too long. In part, it is because we are tolerant of a wide range of speech in a way that the Right is not. But I am not arguing for restricting the range of speech. People with Delay's or Rove's views deserve a hearing in the public sphere. It is just that we have no obligation to give a soapbox to monsters and criminals.

So the next time you see CNN or ABC, e.g., interview Tom Delay with a straight face, send a protest email and scream bloody murder and notice which corporation paid for Delay to be on the public airwaves. But better yet, can't we form a facebook page for this with alerts, and get organized about it?

Good comments dear professor Cole. Thank you.
For a long time there has been a nefarious press campaign to demoralize the American public. The purpose of it has been to dehumanize the American public, to convert it into sheep, so it can be better manipulated and corralled.

Not to diminish the very valid point you make about the media, Juan Cole, I think a much more important point is that the left gets virtually no or absolutely no hearing in the media. That has apparently been going on for decades and that, more than anything, produces the constant and creeping shift to the right that we continue to see in national politics.

The left doesn't even have a place at the table. So one one side, you have the most extreme right wingers regularly invited to a prominent place at the table, and on the other side, you have lefties almost completely excluded, even derided.

Yes, the rot started when the Iran-Contra scandal ended with a few slightly slapped wrists, rather than long prison sentences.

The terrorist-supporting North has been completely rehabilitated, to the extent he is still able to lie about crucial issues (number of dead in US bombing raid, Herat area). This isn't a patriot, it's a despicable scumbag, but the right wing noise machine has such power that anyone pointing out the incongruity will face a witch hunt.

How would blanketing the corporate media with emails of complaint make a difference when the same people who own the corporate media own the government? The networks say what the advertisers want them to say. So the advertisers would not lean on the networks unless it really hurt their sales. In the case of defense contractors, nuclear reactor manufacturers, major oil companies, a consumer boycott is not relevant to the advertisers.

Excellent idea. I was so offended when I saw DeLay on the air, especially here in Texas where his gerrymandered congressional districts kept us from sending a fair balance of people to Congress. I'll write and complain as soon as I figure out what channel interviewed him -- we were channel surfing the returns and I think we clicked away when we saw his nasty little face.

Dear Juan,

Just wish to add to your list the phoney "think tanks". In my opinion it must be a criminal offence to suggest to public that some of the people associated with these "think tanks" were academics; the impressive-sounding titles that these organizations often give to their members (such as "Director of ...", "Associate Director of ...") are bound to suggest, to the unsuspecting people, that these were respectable members of the academic community. From time to time I read some of the things that these people present to public as their "publications", which turn out to be pieces of trash on a par with things that get printed on the boxes of, let us say, chewing gums. There must be a distinction between an academic who does independent research and actually knows something about a subject matter to some considerable detail, and a mercenary who just writes worthless pieces for newspapers in exchange for some cash. Close inspection reveals that some of the above-mentioned "Director of ..." have actually no group to direct, no students to teach or supervise, no academic seminars to organise or attend, etc. The interested should just visit the websites of some of these "think tanks" and review the CVs and lists of "publications" of these so-called Directors. Some of these individuals turn out not to have even a single publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

What we need in this nation, Juan, is a white-collar crime police. We value enforcement of physical crimes and violent crimes far more than economic or political crimes. I suppose the function of the FBI is somewhat to police the upper echelons of power structures, but it's certainly evolved into nothing but a tool of corruption.

We should think of policing our white collars with a real enforcement division, not the piecemeal crap interested districts attorneys have barely given to justice - Elliot Spitzer's work in New York State comes to mind. Congress needs an enforcement unit to prosecute the violations to the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress; too much law is passed, too little of it enforced. Historically the Executive has lost it's checks and balances, having become a rogue state in and of itself, and not just uniquely under Cheney.

White collar enforcement of the law would rout out corruption clearly and quickly.

I have been wondering for some time how DeLay was getting on Face the Nation or MTP after being indicted but, as mentioned, for years now infamous celebrity pundits such as North or G. Gordon Liddy have been allowed to comment free of being first described as convicted or indicted for crimes against our nation.

I have, over the years, tried writing letters to the stations but no reply was ever returned. This has kept me from news on the major networks for years but if I had a way to keep these criminals from being rehabilitated on the Sunday shows and get reasonable discourse from honest Americans back on the major networks I would love to add my name to boycotts or any mass group mailing that would end this parade of human detritus from being considered when important questions pertaining to the direction of our nation are being asked in a public forum such as MTP or FTN.

The "left"-- whatever that is-- needs to go back to the fundamental textbook of how the media controls the public mind, while pretending to be a "democratizing" force. That would be Jerry Mander's Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television -- published in about 1975, and largely overlooked even then. The media has never been about disseminating Truth, and always about selling air time and products. Crime pays, and big crime pays really big.

Is it not it revealing that Karl Rove is showing support for Obama now? Does anyone on this message box believe that Obama will deviate from the status quo in Washington? Will Obama get us out of Iraq, Afghanistan, and repudiate the idea that America is the world's police? Or, will Obama continue the Bush Doctrine of preemetive wars? Will Obama give more trillions to the banksters just as Bush did? Will Obama bring us into more wars? Will Obama bring any change at all, or will he serve the global elites just like every other president we've had in recent history? When will people realize that presidents don't run anything meaningful and that there are powerful people "behind the sceen" that run the country? When Obama brings us into war with pakistan, Iran, or Sudan, and conflicts with russia and china, will people finally admit that we have a grpup of elites running the show?

Juan,

You are absolutely on target. The lame-ass, tone-deaf media needs to know that we, the country, doesn't accept the Delays and the Roves as legitimate commentators and I'd gladly become part of an effort to deluge them with emails, et. al.

I don't know if a Media Matters already has such a mechanism, but it would seem that they would be a likely resource to 'pro-actively' notify us of an appearance and we'll do the rest. Having said that, I personally don't care if they're on FauxNoise or not. In fact I'm sorta thinking, like Grover Norquist (gag), that I'm for corralling the wingnuts - both performers and viewers - into one place, Faux, and letting them suck themselves into their personal 'black hole'. It won't take long for advertisers to recognize thier limited, and shrinking, audience and even Murdoch will make changes. That also means nobody outside the rightwing bothers to watch the thing - ever. Of course Media Matters can continue to monitor them to make sure they don't wander off the reservation, but the rest of us can simply put them out of our minds...and by all means no other media source should ever quote them - maybe an Olbermann 'Worst Persons' but that's it.

Great idea!

For reasons too numerous to go into here, I have given up on virtually any broadcast media news programs (Democracy Now, when I can find it, maybe Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman, etc. being occasional exceptions). Basically, I just can't stand the stupidity and dishonesty of it.

Anyway, I made an exception on Election Night. After some channel surfing, MSNBC seemed like the least objectionable choice because I did in fact see that Rachel and Keith were going to be on. Then Chris Matthews popped up and never shut his mouth the rest of the night. At one point, he was suddenly interviewing Tom DeLay! Couldn't believe it, although I shouldn't have been shocked. I yelled to my partner, "that guy is supposed to be in JAIL!" DeLay had this frozen, hatchet-faced grin and was spouting his wicked nonsense and Matthews just kept laughing and smirking at everything. He did more or less call DeLay a hater, forget the exact words.

So yes, advertiser boycotts are a good idea. I've given it some thought but always figured it would take a lot of staffing, volunteer or otherwise, to keep up with it all. Maybe Facebook would be a possibility, but I'm still pretty new to a lot of the Web 2.0 stuff and trying to figure it out.

At any rate, in watching that four-hour-plus election night coverage, I figure I have now met or exceeded my lifetime maximum exposure dosage to Chris Matthews.

I guess you haven't noticed that we already DO have an organization that monitors the media and exhorts folks to become activists to try and reform the Propaganda System. That organization is FAIR: Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting. In the UK/EU, there is Media Lens. Your seeming to not know of these organizations is puzzling, but does demonstrate how well they're marginalized. As for the System, I find it easier to ignore it and spend my precious, finite time getting information I need from sources I trust, like your blog. Indeed, one of the best things I've enjoyed about my retirement from teaching is being freed from the necessity of watching the Propaganda System and then debunking or pointing out its falsehoods and spin. But such behavior by corporate media has existed for well over 100 years. And until more people come to realize that the System's power and sway ratifies Orwell's warning about it, we will continue to suffer it and its consequences.

I am invigorated by our presidential victory, although I don't expect to have all my priorities recognized in the short term. But better and more fair news coverage should be at the front of the list, and a grass roots campaign of complaints to new organizations and sponsors is the best start.

It is widely observed, as Prof. Cole notes, that the right is generally intolerant of a wide range of opinion (and this characteristic, really a weak form of fascism, is part and parcel of their being better funded and organized). Perhaps it's regrettable, certainly offensive, that we see liars and crooks on TV, but democracy is where we trust each other to know liars and crooks as such when we see them. The networks are airing the current crop of liars and crooks for sensation, and their sponsors are paying them to so that the liars and crooks will be believed: the former is nothing but business, and we buy it or not at our discretion. The latter is what we work against, and I favor two strategies: educate others to help them better recognize liars and crooks, and -- let the liars and crooks make themselves as ridiculous, as implausible, as impossible to believe as they want to be.

We don't need left wing news to counter right wing news, we need neutral news media. We don't need left wing versions of Rush Limbaugh. There is no chance that right wing corporate news media will "allow in" more left wing or even neutral news. Its purpose is to bias the news. But to the extent that right wing funding or intention does not cover all the bills, at least some corporate attention is directed to profits. If you want to do something, advertise in neutral media. Favor businesses that advertise on neutral media. Regularly inform the non-neutral media in your area in writing that you will not advertise with them, or frequent businesses that advertise (and thus support)non-neutral news. Regularly encourage, in writing, media that is close to neutral. Tell them you will suport them and their advertisers more if they move toward neutrality. This last does NOT mean that "neutral" is an average of opinion, as has become all too common, ie, one ranting right wing opinion in close proximity to one left wing ranter. What media currently lacks, and Professor Cole supplies, is information that provides a larger context to the news of the day--information which increases the scope of relevant information. If there is profit to be had in media possessing a solid and fiercely neutral stance, at least some media will move there, and biased media will be coerced in that direction. --JamesL
