BEARD. Arabic لحيةlihyah or ذقنzaqan.
The beard is regarded by Muslims as the badge of the dignity of manhood. The Prophet is related to have said, – “Do the opposite of the polytheists and let your beard grow long.” (Mishkat, xx. iv.) And the growing of a beard is said to be Fitrah, or one of those customs which have been observed by every Prophet. [FITRAH.]
