Sunni-Shiite Unity in Iraq (against American “Designs”

The Iraqi Islamic Party had called on Sunnis and Shiites to pray together at a major mosque in Baghdad, and was met with success when thousands from both sects showed up on Friday. The prayer leader, Walid al-Adhami, denounced the US and the UK for attempting to divide Iraqis along religious lines so as to rule them. He said they thought Iraq was alike a piece of cake that you could just cut up as you liked. For those commentators on the Right in the US who point to the lack of Sunni-Shiite divisions as a sign of American success: maybe you should be careful what you wish for. Sometimes pan-Islam has been a powerful anti-imperial force.
