CIA Spy Case: Blaming the Victim

The Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them Machine has been revved up against Ambassador Joe Wilson for daring dispute the Bush administration. Attempts are being made to tag Wilson as a leftie Democrat with an axe to grind against Bush. But Wilson served under Republican as well as Democratic administrations, and George HW Bush Senior lauded the job Wilson did as acting ambassador in Baghdad just before the Gulf War. Wilson and his wife, a CIA operative, had given a couple thousand dollars to George W. Bush’s campaign in 2000. I.e. they chose Bush over Gore until Karl Rove pulled those dirty tricks against McCain in South Carolina (like the infamous automated telephone poll asking if you would vote for McCain if you knew he had done some outrageous thing–thus implying that he might have). It is true that Wilson is supporting Kerry now, but might that not be an artifact of the way the Bushies treated him and his wife?

Then it is being held against Wilson that he said he wanted Karl Rove frog marched out of the White House in handcuffs. But he said that because a journalist told him that Karl Rove had said, “Joe Wilson’s wife is fair game.” At the time, Wilson assumed that this statement indicated that Rove authorized the leak of his wife’s name as a CIA operative, which is a serious crime. Wilson wasn’t being petty. He was saying that if Rove was responsible, he should be prosecuted under the law for what he had done. If Rove really did condone the outing of a CIA operative, putting decades of covert operations assets at risk, then he should certainly be made to resign. A man with so few scruples should not be in the White House.
