Emails and Groping: Our Halloween Election keeps Scaring us to Death

By Juan Cole | (Informed Comment) | – –

All Hallow’s Eve, contracted now to Halloween, became conflated with the Scottish and Irish pagan Samhain, the harvest festival marking the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. It was an in-between time, when the barrier between this world and the next shimmered and let in decrepit old sprites and gods and monsters that had begun slipping away into the aether with the advent of Christianity. And, the souls of the dead of the past year intruded to visit their homes before being shunted off to the netherworld, as well. Since Celts thought power resided in the head, they often beheaded defeated enemies, so All Hallow’s Eve was the occasion for a fair amount of fumbling about on the part of those who had died violently.

The 2016 election is very much like Samhain, i.e. like Halloween, in breaking down ordinary time and reality, and letting ogres of the past into our daily lives.

So we can’t get out of our minds the image of those tiny hands, back in 1982, and 1996, and 1998, grabbing parts of strangers’ anatomy. The simulacrum of the grabber and kisser and predator has popped out into 2016 and wants to replace George Washington and Ike Eisenhower. We are being asked, with a straight face, to elect a groper in chief. A puritan people who drove Gary Hart from politics for some hanky panky on The Monkey Business and impeached Bill Clinton even though he never got to third base, is now all right with making president someone who groped a porn star and then offered to drop $10,000 when he couldn’t get his way. We are entranced and willing to give our fates into the hands of a weird combination of Frankenstein’s monster and the Vampire Lestat.

The horror of Halloween always lies in the evil deeds of the past now resurrected, as with Syrian director Moustapha Akkad’s “Halloween” films.

And we’ve had to hear again about the soiled blue dress and the conquests of Bill.

And again about the Anthony Weiner sexting. And to learn what we never wanted to know, that the FBI is investigating him for sexting with a minor. I mean, if that isn’t a Halloween horror movie I don’t know what is.

And Herbert Hoover has come back to tell us we’re in a Great Depression and the only way to get out of it is to halt budget deficits and tighten our belts and lower taxes on the rich (the opposite of how FDR actually got us out of the Depression). The creepy dead and the blighted fading deities of old have come crowding through our 2016 rift in the time space continuum. Long-since failed and discredited trickle down economics has been cheekily resurrected. Why, if only you give more of the nation’s money to the super-rich, they’ll make you rich too. You’ll see. Just wait. And wait. And wait.

It is as though the worst nightmares of the old Soviet Communists finally came through, but with all the irony of history, only after they themselves had faded into the netherworld.

1485 ( Human Rights

And then there is the revived horror of the Japanese internment and the exclusion of Holocaust-threatened Jews from the United States, only with the perverse magic of Samhain the Japanese have become Mexicans and the Jews have become their spiritual cousins, the Muslims, the other Abrahamians.

So no wonder Hillary Clinton’s emails can’t be killed. They are Undead emails, slipping in at the fraying of dimensional reality in this season of resurrected monsters and corpses, to haunt us.

Only the silver stake of an actual election can finally kill these spiteful specters, and save us from this long night of phantasy horror.

  1. This election is like some kind of grotesque masque ball where all the dancers are serpents from hell. At midnight on election day they will remove their masks to reveal who they really are. Trumps mask has already been knocked off briefly, but Clinton’s mask is still just about in place. One thing is for sure, the faces behind the masks of these two pretenders to the throne will be far more grisly than anything the kids are wearing on this halloween.

  2. Halloween movie….”Carlos Danger”…..starring Tony Weiner and Huma Abedin.

What a great name for a horror picture actress…Huma Abedin….right up there with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.

  3. Obviously, extreme right-wing elements in law enforcement is making their preferences known regarding Trump’s “draining the swamp” promise. It appears Herr Comey has stepped on his privates once too often? And will be the first to go.

  4. Halloween would be a good time for Hillary Clinton to cut Huma Abedin loose. Hillary has clung to Abedin for far too long. Huma Abedin first demonstrated bad judgment when she married Anthony Weiner, who was an arrogant little SOB even before his multiple sexting scandals. That Abedin has been unable to control her personal life (which has morphed into a grade B soap opera), and that she allegedly has State Department-related E-mails on a computer used by Weiner, simply confirms her continued bad judgment.

Huma Abedin’s bad judgment, inability to control her personal life, and all-around lack of professionalism has become too great a distraction for Clinton’s presidential campaign. Clinton needs to drop her from the campaign and as an advisor, in order to clear the decks for a final push these last few days before the election.

    • So we are to judge a woman’s ability to do a job on the basis of whom she chooses to marry? Since there are a lot of husbands who are scum, you would have to eliminate an awful lot of women from their jobs. And Abedin failed to control Weiner’s behavior? When is the last time you or anyone could control a person’s behavior, unless you are a cop putting them in jail? Parents can’t control their own kids. You are just looking for an excuse, it seems to me. I have no opinion of Abedin one way or another as to her competence since I know next to nothing about the advice she gives Clinton. But it is beyond ridiculous to apply your standards to her or any woman, or any man, for that matter as I can’t control my wife’s behavior.

      • I made no comment on Huma Abedin’s competence. I stated that she has become too great a distraction for Clinton’s campaign and should be dropped. That Huma Abedin chose to marry Anthony Weiner, who was an arrogant little SOB, says something about her judge of character. And her subsequent, apparent sending and receipt of official E-mails on a computer to which Weiner had access demonstrates her lack of judgment and professionalism.

Moreover, I didn’t state she failed to control Weiner’s behavior. I stated she was unable to control her personal life, turning it into a grade B soap opera. For evidence just consider that she agreed to appear in that soap opera film “Weiner,” which purported to catalogue Weiner’s attempt to run for mayor of New York between his first sexting episode and the second. This film showing their domestic trials, tribulations, and thoughts was akin to “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette.” It was Huma Abedin’s tribute to “The Kardashians.”

Hillary Clinton does not need the huge distraction Huma Abedin’s personal problems and lack of professionalism represent. She should drop her from the campaign and focus on the final few days before the election.

        • I have seen a lot of smart women make stupid choices when it comes to boyfriends and husbands and men do the same. When it comes to love you can’t judge a person’s judgment on other things. That seems pretty obvious, I would think, to anyone who has observed human nature for any length of time. Love often results in people doing stupid things. You assume a lot about the emails when we know next to nothing about them. You are too quick to leap to conclusions.

    • Huma is the brains behind the HRC operation.
You wanna see Hilary without the brains ? Not me.

President Bill Clinton’s actions during the White House, if completely consensual, really don’t merit anyone’s time. However, women have stepped forward and stated that President Clinton’s actions were not consensual. If this is true, he really is no different to Donald Trump with regards to harassing women.

      • I never related President Bill Clinton’s actions to former Secretary of State’s Hillary Clinton’s campaign for President. That is an unjustified imputation on your part. There was absolutely no guilt by association.

    • Bill Clinton’s accusers have zero evidence and are backed by the same gang that brought us Ken Starr, so they have very little credibility.

  6. I’m still waiting for the Watergate-like headline here, you know, something that will continue to resonate in 40 yrs:

    “Clinton Uses Unsecure Email Server!”

    Wow. Devastating.
Right up there with breaking into the offices of your political opponent, or the office of a whistleblowers’ shrink, or using the IRS and CIA to attack your political opponents as you commit real, actual “high crimes.”

Did Clinton sell state secrets to a foreign entity?
Did she commit treason by handing over the blueprints for the next generation fighter plane?
Did she purposely do anything remotely close to even a hint of a high crime or misdemeanor?

Poor George Shultz, wondering why he wasn’t given the same sort of credit for the Marine barracks bombing in Oct. 1983 that killed hundreds of US Marines.

Gee, I’m not quite sure, but I think just maybe Clinton wasn’t the President when Benghazi occurred, accepting the notion that it was more than another unpredictable blindside, sorta like Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

Oh, and the buck stops at the Secretary of State.

So basically, what we have is a high crime that isn’t, i.e. another Fox News Clinton “scandal” that the MSM runs with in order to appear really fair & balanced, while actually taking the bait and helping to make another mountain out of a molehill.

I’m with Bill Maher on this one: there is no equivalency here.
Trump is a self-serving, egotistical and narcissistic predator.
    Clinton is a life-long bureaucrat.

If that’s the choice, I’ll stick with the bureaucrat.

  7. Here we have the FBI and Russia working in concert attempting to have an effect on our national election through character assassination of the leading candidate.

The constitution of the United States, art. 3, s. 3, defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war (q.v.) against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort. This offense is punished with death.
