Mexico ‘Astonished’ at Israel’s Netanyahu’s Tweet backing Wall

TeleSur | – –

Earlier on Saturday, Netanyahu tweeted: “President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel’s southern border… Great success. Great idea.”

Mexico’s government on Saturday rebuked Israel for a tweet by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that applauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to build a border wall with Mexico to keep out undocumented migrants.

Earlier on Saturday, Netanyahu tweeted: “President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel’s southern border. It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea.”

The comment was swiftly rejected by leaders of the Jewish community in Mexico, and prompted an unusually blunt statement from Mexico’s foreign ministry.

“The Foreign Ministry expressed to the government of Israel, via its ambassador in Mexico, its profound astonishment, rejection and disappointment over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s message on Twitter about the construction of a border wall.

“Mexico is a friend of Israel and should be treated as such by its Prime Minister,” the ministry said, noting Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray had only on Friday expressed his deep affection for Israel in an event marking Holocaust memorial day.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that the Prime Minister’s office later issued a statement saying Netanyahu was not trying to voice an opinion on U.S.-Mexican relations.

Mexico’s government and Trump have been locked in a bitter dispute over his election campaign promise to build a wall on the U.S. southern border that he says Mexico will foot the bill for. Mexico has repeatedly said it will not pay for the wall.

The Central Committee of the Jewish Community in Mexico issued a statement saying it “forcefully rejected” Netanyahu’s comment, while several prominent Mexicans of Jewish origin sharply criticized the Israeli leader on Twitter.

“So you like walls @netanyahu? Here you have a couple of nice designs,” said one, Mony de Swaan, a former head of the Mexican telecommunications regulator, posting images of walls commemorating Bergen-Belsen, the Nazi concentration camp where diarist Anne Frank died, and the Warsaw Ghetto.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Thursday canceled a visit to meet Trump next week after U.S. leader advised him to forgo the trip if he was not willing to pay for the wall.

In a call on Friday morning, the leaders pledged to work out their differences, and the Mexican government said the two had agreed not to discuss the issue of payment for now.

  1. Around 1600, converso’s suspected of being secretly Jews were tortured and burned by the Spanish Inquisition in Mexico too. I know that it is long-ago history but it is “before WW2”.

    • Around the same time hundreds of thousand of Jews lived in Catholic Poland, the Catholic Austrian Empire, and Catholic Italy. They were welcomed there by popes and Kings like Casimir IV. In fact Poland was knows as “the Paradise of the Jews.” Why do you think there were so many Jews there at the start of WWII. The fate of Jews in Europe depended on their relationship with the kings of the realm. The inquistion in Europe was something more benign, the Spanish Inquisition tho was tough.

  2. The Wall of Shame is only the Beginning.

To man his highly touted deportation force aka “door-kickers,” President Donald J.Trump is reviving an old depreciated Bush/Cheney program that deputizes local city police officers to enforce federal immigration law and assure the loyalty of citizens.

Also in his odious executive order this week, Trump said he wants to empower local law enforcement to act as his immigration police and augment the nationwide ”investigation, apprehension, or detention” of immigrants and those who support them while in the country illegally.

If you reside in Arizona, Texas or California expect some armed-to-the-teeth transplanted hillbilly to be pounding on your door in 2017 asking who mows the yard or do you have a cleaning service or a nannie? Do you speak Spanish? Favorite Mexican restaurant?

Unwittingly hiring undocumented “Mow-blow-and-go” guys will become a Federal crime. Not reporting a sighting of a brown-skinned person will become a misdemeanor.

getoffmedz is a f••king crimewave, there were 15 muchachos installing a new roof here last month. My groundskeeper is an “anchor dad.” getoffmedz prefers Negra Modelo over Budweiser and Mezcal over Whiskey . . . . . Now toasting – FU 45!! and the angry, ignorant racists that brought you!

  3. Israel is already growing less popular in the US. Binding itself to the Most Hated President To Date (he’s number one!!) isn’t going to improve Israel’s prospects with Americans. To say nothing of the rest of the world.

And, incidentally, Trump’s most trusted advisor Steve Bannon is not only a promoter of antisemitism, but also holocaust denial. As are too many of Trump’s admirers.

  4. one of the chants at LAX protest: from Palestine to Mexico, all the walls have got to go.
