Hamas Calls for ‘Intifada’ Should US Deem Jerusalem Israel’s Capital

TeleSur | – –

The statement has come amid speculation that Trump will announce next week his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas called for a new “intifada” Saturday should U.S. President Donald Trump go ahead with his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“We warn against such a move and call on the Palestinian people to revive the intifada if these unjust decisions on Jerusalem are adopted,” the group said in a statement.

Calling the move a “U.S. assault on the city” that would legitimize Israeli control over it, the group added, “Any decision whatsoever would not change the fact that al-Quds (Jerusalem) is of Arab and Islamic identity, and is part of the Palestinian land.”

The statement has come amid speculation that Trump will announce next week his recognition of Jerusalem as the new capital, in line with his campaign promise to transfer the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Hamas has affirmed that such a move constitutes a violation of international law and one that may serve as a cover to expunge Palestinians from the territory.

Other Palestinian groups have also spoken out against Trump’s possible decision.

“East al-Quds, with its holy places, is the beginning and the end of any solution and any project that saves the region from destruction,” Palestinian Presidential Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said a day earlier.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has also warned the United States against the transfer of its embassy, saying all U.S. embassies in the Arab world would have to close in the face of Arab outrage that would follow such an action.

  1. No surprises here.

The United Nations has previously condemned Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem – and the P.L.O. mission in the District of Columbia closure moves by the U.S. State Department that recently occurred may be the final nails in the coffin of Trump’s attempts to negotiate a final status agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The International Criminal Court delegates convene in New York at the United Nations HQ this upcoming Monday with the preliminary investigation status of war crimes against Israeli officials being on the ICC agenda for discussion as the eagerly-awaited report of ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda on that issue is expected.

The Palestinians are wisely seeking the ICC to enforce international law and eschewing the U.S. State Department as brokers for peace in the region.

The prospects of a serious “Third Intifada” appear to be remote absent deep future Israeli moves against al-Aqsa such as that motivated the initiation of the Second Intifada.

  2. An intifada is a win-win situation for Israel and America….including President Rump…and including Bibi.
Americans will rally around Israel as it would portray an Intifada as an Islamic terrorist operation. Israel will rally around Bibi as he accentuates that he will fight for viva Israel and viva Jews.

  3. “What the government of Israel calls its eternal, undivided capital is among the most precarious, divided cities in the world….[The Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem] have separate buses, schools, health facilities, commercial centres, and speak a different language. In their neighbourhoods, Israeli settlers and border police are frequently pelted with stones…Balloons equipped with cameras hover above East Jerusalem, maintaining surveillance over the Palestinian population. Most Israelis have never visited and don’t even know the names of the Palestinian areas their government insists on calling its own. Municipal workers come to these neighbourhoods with police escorts.” link to detailedpoliticalquizzes.wordpress.com
