US Cuts Aid to Pakistan As Trump Ramps Up Blackmail Tactic

TeleSur | – –

On Wednesday U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said the U.S. would withhold US$255 million in assistance to Pakistan.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert announced Thursday it would freeze nearly all security aid to Pakistan until “the Pakistani government takes decisive action” against terrorist groups.

Although Nauert did not specify an amount, the freeze can be estimated in hundreds of millions given that a day prior U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the Washington would withhold US$255 million in assistance to Pakistan.

The announcement come days after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Pakistan’s fight against terrorism tweeting on Jan. 1 that the United States had “foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid in the last years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit.”

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!

In response Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif reminded Trump: “You carried out 57,800 attacks on Afghanistan from our bases, your forces were supplied arms and explosives through our soil, thousands of our civilians and soldiers became victims of the war initiated by you.” Pakistan also summoned U.S. Ambassador David Hale to discuss the statement and lodged a strongly-worded protest.

The diplomatic crisis was unleashed by President Trump less than a week after China, Pakistan and Afghanistan launched a trilateral cooperation mechanism designed to advance China’s proposed global trade route, the One Belt, One Road initiative, which passes through Pakistan and will potentially include Afghanistan.

In the past months the U.S. government has publicly threatened nations and institutions that do not comply with its policies and interests, using the financial aid it provides.

After the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the U.S. unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Dec. 21, Haley said the U.S. would remember the vote “when we are called upon to once again make the world’s largest contribution to the U.N.” Prior to the vote Trump had warned: “let them vote against us … We’ll save a lot.”

  1. I don’t see how cutting off the supply line to Afghanistan will help the USA ‘win’ there. Unless this is some ham handed way of getting out of Afghanistan.

This is another nation that your president is insulting, unnecessarily. How many are left? Other than Russia.

  2. Unfortunately, both sides are right. Pakistan’s junta cynically helped America wage a stupid, murderous war, while continuing to help its pet factions in Afghanistan fight back. It blew back on subsequent Pakistani governments in the form of the Pakistani Taliban, and now ordinary Pakistanis face the problem of getting democracy back amidst a 3-way conflict on their own soil between a treacherous Army, its former jihadi stooges and whatever the Hell the USA wants this week. I see no outcomes that favor the civilian government retaining the resources it needs to survive and reform – other than massive Chinese intervention.

  3. “your forces were supplied arms and explosives through our soil”

Past tense? Does the US still have the alternate overland supply (or escape) route through Russia?

  4. Russia cut off their route, so the US better stop pissing them off. I mean, Pakistan was only pursuing its regional battle with India in supporting opposing factions in Affhanistan as well as helping the American war effort. Playing ‘many sides’ to paraphrase our fearless leader. Cutting off aid will only drive them further towards China and hamper our already futile war effort! Great move, Mr Stable Genius!!
