2 US Soldiers Killed; Parliament Tries Again

The Iraqi parliament will make another attempt on Tuesday to pass a provincial elections law that resolves controversies over how to treat troubled Kirkuk Province.

AFP summarizes political violence in Iraq on Monday, which included the killing of 2 US GIs, strikes at Iraqi security forces on Palestine Street in Baghdad and an attempt on the life of the Kurdish deputy governor of Ninevah Province in Mosul.

Four persons were wounded in an explosion near the Shiite shrine city of Karbala, on the eve of an influx of pilgrims in connection with a commemoration of the Shiite messiah or Mahdi, the hidden Twelfth Imam.

Ali Adib, an MP with the Islamic Mission (Dawa) Party in Iraq, expressed his hope that Saudi Arabia would review and change its diplomatic stance toward Iraq. PM Nuri al-Maliki is not presently welcome in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, apparently because he is suspected of being a partisan Shiite who has it in for Sunnis.

This time, the grand ayatollahs in Najaf may not back a particular party or coalition in the upcoming provincial elections.

‘Baghdad

Two people including an Iraqi soldier were killed and 15 others (9 Iraqi soldiers and 6 civilians) were injured in a roadside bomb that targeted a patrol of the Iraqi army near al Mawwal restaurant in Palestine Street in east Baghdad around 6:00 a.m.

Two policemen were injured in a roadside bomb that targeted a police patrol on Mahdiyah bridge in Doura neighborhood in south Baghdad around 8:00 a.m.

Police found two unidentified bodies in Baghdad. The first body was found in Talbiyah and the second was found in Iskan.

Nineveh

Two insurgents were killed when they attacked a check point of the Iraqi army in Sina’at al Karama area west of Mosul city on Monday afternoon.

Four policemen were injured in a parked car bomb that targeted their vehicle in Sooq al Ma’ash area in downtown Mosul city on Monday afternoon.

An IED exploded in Dorat al Yarmouk area in west Mosul city targeting the convoy of Khisro Koran, the deputy of Mosul governor on Monday afternoon. One of Korans; guards was killed and six others were wounded.

A body of a female employee in the governorate office were found in al Zohoor area in downtown Mosul city.’
