Before Gaza, there was the US Genocide in Vietnam

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment; Feature) – I am writing this essay on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Vietnam from the genocidal war that the United States inflicted on this Southeast Asian country (and Laos and Cambodia) for three decades. The story begins in 1887 with French colonialism established over most of Indochina. The […]

Avoiding Climate Breakdown will Require curing the Cancer Stage of Capitalism

Peter G. Prontzos

Are we doomed? The short answer is: maybe not. As we all know, humanity is facing a climate breakdown. It’s clear that we are in the early stages of a global catastrophe – and one that will happen, not some time in the distant future, but is impacting all of us, right now. What is also clear […]

Dumb and Dumber: Trump’s Tariffs will cost each U.S. family $1072, wipe out Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment; Feature) – Just about every day, the U.S. president does something that is incompetent, dangerous, or stupid. Often all three. His decision to proceed with tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China, is all of the above. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada will hit back hard at the […]

As long as Nukes are on the Table in Ukraine, We are Skating at the Edge of Global Catastrophe

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment; Featured) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has broached he use of battlefield nuclear weapons in Ukraine, We all hope it is an empty threat, since such an escalation could possibly trigger an all-out global holocaust. However, nothing is certain in war, and there are many scenarios in which nuclear weapons […]

Daniel Ellsberg: The Most Dangerous Man in America

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment; Feature) –    Former Defense Department analyst Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers to the media in 1971, died on June 16.    When Ellsberg (with the help of Anthony J. Russo) released the Pentagon Papers to the media in 1971, he expected to spend the rest of his […]

As Bernie Sanders warns against Tribalism in America, Who will Stand Up to do the Right Thing?

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment) – It is, unfortunately, not an understatement to say that our world that is becoming increasingly divided, increasingly tribalized. Tribalism is also growing within the United States of course,: racism, homophobia, blue states versus red states, neo-nazis declaring, “Jews will not replace us!”, and simmering anger — dramatically illustrated by […]

Hypocrisy: Putin should be Punished as a War Criminal, but so Should many in Washington, D.C.

Hypocrisy: Putin should be Punished as a War Criminal, but so Should many in Washington, D.C.

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Feature, Special to Informed Comment) – It’s true – Russian president Vladimir Putin is a war criminal. As I wrote when the conflict with Ukraine began: “the attack on Ukraine was a clear violation of international law, and there is absolutely no excuse for this invasion.” In fact, launching a war of aggression is […]

A Different World is Possible: From Yemen War to Afghan Starvation, Our Tragedies are Exacerbated by Letting the US Military-Industrial Complex Run Wild

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment) – Right now, we have more than enough knowledge, wealth, and the capacity to create a just and prosperous world, but we are nowhere near realizing this dream. One reason is that we are constantly told about so-called “scarcities”, and how expensive it would be actually to help people and […]

Roots of White Rage

Roots of White Rage

Peter G. Prontzos

Vancouver (Special to Informed Comment) Recent development show just how divided the United States of America really is. The latest polling shows that 72% of Americans believe that democracy is in serious danger. Even more strikingly, 43% said civil war was at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years. Robert Reich, a former US […]
