I took the liberty of putting your eloquent and illuminating last paragraph into a Christian context. If it is bothersome you are welcome to delete my comment but I think that it can show that all religions and moral codes have strong similarities:
It is futile to try and split any belief system – including Christianity – into two opposing camps: moderates and extremists. Any attempt to delineate Christianity into binaries is problematic. Christians are not a monolithic grouping. This by definition means that there are multiple currents of Christian practice. There are even multiple forms of fundamentalisms. All may share a puritanical approach to reading the Bible, but even they can come out with contradictory interpretations. It is worth remembering that we are all configurations of multiple identities. etc.
But wait Tom! What about the military budget? What is America going to do to sustain the current spending? What is your government going to do to make sure the arms manufacturers survive? What are you going to do with all those drones? Sell them to Amazon?
