When I hear about this sort of stuff the image that immediately comes into my head is that of the Warsaw Ghetto. The National Socialists half starved the Jews in the ghettos (before they slaughtered them).
I know I will be accused of playing the "Hitler card" but the truth is that this sort of blockage is the hallmark of some very unsavory regimes.
You know I find attack ads completely unpersuasive. And everybody I know claim likewise. So, the question is whose vote is changed by these ads. As I understand it the chief purpose of attack ads is to demoralize voters and keep them away from the polls.
If that is the case then the solution is to require compulsory attendance at the polls by every citizen. This would remove the rational for attack ads and a lot of the money that is spent by these various unknown players. Of course, in order to implement a measure like this we would have to improve the current voting process (something that should be done anyway).
Tyrannical governments fall because they lose the support of their base, not because they are defeated militarily by the militia. We are seeing this happen at the moment in Syria.
