Professor, you are one of the few people with the credentials and the level-headed assessment of this situation that we should listen to. It appears we, the U.S. people, have learned nothing from our experience in Viet Nam, Afghanistan or Iraq.

  • Terrorism and the other Religions
    • Michael Lardner 04/23/2013 at 9:00 am

Dear Professor: This is an excellent, timely article. I know a number of people who state and believe that Islam is an evil religion which deeply disturbed me. Of course, none of them have read the Koran. I think of the historical facts concerning Christianity, which you cite, and ask "does this make Christianity an evil religion?

I also read the article on Borders with dismay, as I have the same concern about physical book stores disappearing. I love to be in them. It reminds me of how I feel about them and while I am in them. It also reminds me of the times I remember fondly of being with my father going to old book stores in downtown NYC and browsing them. It gave me a warm feeling I still remember. I hope these stores never disappear.

      Dear Professor:

Your piece on the sad and disgraceful shooting in Tucson was moving and made me say “ENOUGH”, “ENOUGH” to the gun lobby in the U.S. I have been a vocal opponent of our culture of violence and far too liberal gun laws. It is time for rational people in this country to say “ENOUGH” and unite to change this disastrous situation.

I am also a vocal opponent of the people who spout this vitriol, i.e. Glen Beck, Rushbo, et. al. I am not sure what can be done about them but we can do something about the gun laws. What is the difference of this rhetoric of violence heard from these far right spokespersons from that heard in some Madras as in the Middle East. What is the difference between this white, American gunman and the suicide bombers in Pakistan, Afghanistan or other countries? WHY DOES THE AMERICAN MSM CALL THIS WHAT IT IS, TERRORISM.

We, the people, need to rise up and demand a change to this culture of violence and the gun laws that support it.

Professor, thank you for all you do to keep us informed on this critical area of the world. I see increasing reports on the "actual" status of the war in Afghanistan vs. the propaganda we received on the Iraq war which is curious but welcome. Hopefully, this will encourage the American people to demand an end to our foreign ventures and pay attention to our domestic problems.
Please keep up the excellent work Professor Cole.

  • An Israeli Attack on Iran would reduce Barack Obama to a One-Term President
    • Michael Lardner 08/15/2010 at 8:51 pm

      August 15, 2010

Professor, your post today on an Israeli attack on Iran is an excellent piece, as usual. It quickly summarizes a complex issue and is both reassuring and frightening. The array of powerful forces that want Israel and American to attack are formidable and are not to be underestimated.
Mahan Abedin’s article on the “Illusion of a ‘limited war’ against Iran” is also excellent and should be given wide publicity, especially to those followers of the American right who keep advocating a preemptive strike on Iran. Listening to and speaking to some of these people it is clear they have not thought about the consequences of an attack and clearly underestimate Iran’s response, not to mention how the Arab and Muslim people will react. Have we not learned anything about “preemptive attacks”? The fuzzy reality of this thinking must be exposed before it gains increasing backing.

  • Rudolph: Can You Pass the Terrorism Quiz?
    • Michael Lardner 08/08/2010 at 11:21 am

I stopped reading and/or listening to any MSM years ago, especially after we, the American people, we told many lies by George Bush to “sell and market” the invasion of Iraq. I am disappointed and disgusted with every media for either “selling out to” the administrations or not doing and publishing any real facts to the U. S. public. I especially recall George Bush standing on a pile of rubbish at the World Trade Center in New York City a few days after 9/11 saying the reason al Qaeda had attacked us was they hated our Democracy. If he told the American people the truth, the invasion of Iraq probably would not have happened. Sadly, not one U.S. MSM spoke up nor any major political figure , even though bin Laden’s reasons were known.

The publication of these ‘truths” is welcome and should be widely published by the American MSM to help the American people see what lies we have been told. I will do my part to help in a small way.

      Well done,

I find your comments and references to books on the Qur'an useful as I just started to read it, in an attempt to learn more about the Muslim world. I read your posts every day and find them to be the most useful and truthful information about the Middle East.

Thank you for your coverage of the latest Israeli offense against International Law and morality. Israel has now become a Rogue regime whose actions must be stopped and they must be held accountable.
