Divide, conquer, divide and arm, and arm some more, oh Lordie, we have a regular inferno of war making profit on a scale which only matches that of the 2nd World War in the magnitude of percentage of GDP spending, however now war is a means to its own ends, hence profit$.
Now with the new exit "date" of 2014+, I find it hard to understand the new hard offensive our military has implemented. Yet, military men want to win, and God-damn-it, we have the hardware to do it. Let's roll on to Atlanta! Opps, wrong war...
Askari have long been in the employ of occupiers of conqured lands. These (Afghan) askari are not different than those of past empires. After being driven to dispair by the devistation of conquest and occupation, any source of income, perhaps the only, drives one to the "local" forces. If that is the predominate reason to join, than any hope of these forces having anything more than a wink and a hat tip to the wishes of the occupier are imperial pipe dreams. A mercenary is a mercenary.
The declarations of most all of our politicians that, "the US bond with Israel is unbreakable," is enough to determine that peace and the peace process are a sham that have no relation to peace. Impartial parties with no vested interest would be the best ones to mediate any agreement.
