Santa Cruz, Ca. (Special to Informed Comment; Feature) – HISTORY is always complicated. ELEMENTARY ETHICS is not. “Do not do to others what is hateful to yourself,” as Confucius and Rabbi Hillel put it. Every kindergarten kid understands this.
Maybe it’s because I’m a parent. Maybe it’s because I’m a grandparent. Maybe it’s because I know what it’s like to have a child die. Maybe it’s because I spent much of my life in classrooms. Or maybe it’s because I can grasp kindergarten ethics. Whatever the case may be, this statistic SAYS IT ALL for me.
THE ISRAELIS HAVE MURDERED A CLASSROOM FULL OF KIDS (27), EVERY DAY, ON AVERAGE, FOR 640+ DAYS.
And our government and political class, with some honorable exceptions, support this. They arm it. They pay for it. They offer it political cover. They defend it–while vilifying those who oppose it.
I am unable to think of ANY single fact that more perfectly illustrates the obvious: we have sunk deeply, perhaps irredeemably into the mire of comprehensive depravity and vicious cruelty. History (to me) suggests that it will be very, very hard to recover from this.
