NATO attacked the Belgrade TV bldg. as a "military" target and Manning released video showing the killing of Reuters journalists by US forces, just for starters. There are numerous other examples.
By coincidence, I just read an article about ANNA KARENINA by Prof Gitlin, a vicious personal attack on Tolstoy as a male chauvinist pig. I kid you not. And now this BS here. The guy is full of himself and hot air, and I'm surprised Juan gives him the space. The "fake news" on FB is itself a fake story. I've read enough fake news on the front page of the NY Times not to worry about it.
Thank you, Juan. It needs to be said. They locked up Chelsea Manning, abused her, and threw away the key. Kiriakou served time. Julian Assange is in the same boat. If Snowden came back to the US, they'd lynch him. Treatment of whistleblowers is one of the ugliest sides of the Obama/Clinton coterie.
Well laid out, Juan. Putin's tactics and strategy in Syria have seemed quite coherent. Not something that can be said about US policy, with its imaginary "moderate" rebels. Hillary's presumptive Defense Sec recently said she wanted to go into Syria with more US ground troops, "push back" the Russians, whatever that means, and fight Assad's army at the same time, presumably alongside our al Nusra pals. Something to look forward to, yes?
Seems a bit premature to declare mission accomplished against ISIL. As long as the causes of terrorism (i.e., regime change, invasion, occupation, assassination, drone wars, missile strikes, etc.) remain unaddressed, the reaction (blowback), terrorism, will continue, if not by ISIL, then by its successors. And when you consider that, at various times, we use ISIL or its comrades as instruments of our own foreign policy (our bastards), as in Syria and previously, Afghanistan, then it turns into a Frankenstein monster story... Anyway, that's how it looks to me.
I wonder if Hillary and Barack and the boys and girls in the State Dept realized, when they went in and weaponized and militarized the civil disturbances in Damascus and blew up Syria for their own purposes, that they would take down the EU?
“He was talking about NATO defensive moves in Poland and the Baltic states” - That's a good one, Juan. Too bad Russian annexed Crimea, or NATO could be making some "defensive" moves there, too. What could Putin possibly have to worry about?
Prof Cole - What do you make of the idea that the attack was not on a "consulate" but on a "mission" that housed a CIA base where local "terrorists" were being held and "interrogated"? And that the attack was retaliation for the drone killing of the leader of one of the Islamic groups some months earlier?
Great coverage, Juan. Earlier this week, I had to push my way through the cordons to get to the dentist. It seemed like the cops far outnumbered the protestors. And it all seemed kind of futile and hopeless...
"The video robbed the Bush administration of a propaganda coup, the demise of Saddam, and instead created a fiasco for the US image."
"Then, while Americans have forgotten all the horrible photos that came out of Abu Ghraib, of Iraqis being tortured and abused, the Muslim world has not."

Yes, if only we could somehow prevent people from recording these events. There must be a way. Otherwise, people are liable to see what happened and our image might be tarnished.
Prof Cole - With all due respect, your point # 7 asserting that bin Laden was not executed by US forces seems dubious at best. According to reports, the orders were to kill him. He was unarmed and took a bullet in the head.

Thank you for telling it like it is, Juan.

Well said, Prof. Cole. Strong stuff.
"They're selling postcards of the hanging,
They're painting the passports brown,
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors,
The circus is in town.
At midnight, all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Go out and round up everyone
Who knows more than they do..."
