That was a lot of reading to go w my bagel. My conclusion, based only on sarcasm as my compass, is that Russia is a mafia state and Trump is a mafia don. Just pay them their percentage and all will be fine. And never insult their wives!
This election is not about fact, logic or reason. It's a 'gut' election. Pathos...whether we like or don't like the candidate. I don't like either, but Angela Davis isn't on the ballot, so.....
I would say that the 'check of the Wehrmacht' at he gates of Moscow and then at Stalingrad, was the beginning of the end for Hitler. A protracted end no doubt. The end for ISIL is less certain.
Isn't this an example of an 'original intent' argument analogous the the current disputes regarding the 'original intent' of the 2nd Amendment that so many gun rights advocates cite?
If reports of the Albu Nimr massacre are correct, one has to wonder what our 'allies' in the area have in mind. If 'stability' in the region is in the US national /strategic interest, one has to wonder what the US has in mind. If dialogue over war is of global concern, one has to wander what the UN has in mind.
It 'seems to me' that the airstrikes are more political than military. Looks good to say we are 'degrading and destroying' after the next beheading staggers through the media. I can not but believe that the U.S., Britain and the rest couldn't put a serious hurt on these people if they really wanted to. With the mishmash of interests in the area, I don't think anyone has a handle on the
conflated motives at play. Maybe when Bagdad is shelled, and the airport is closed, the players will sort themselves out.
I don't understand how the Arab/Shia states in the region can allow this mayhem to continue. I would find it refreshing for Iran to announce it had has enough and is sending the Badr Corp and all necessary air power to destroy these criminals.
I don't get Wahabist Saudi Arabia's take on this at all. Turkey? Isreal? US? This is like a mafia state on a rampage. Perhaps Prof. Cole can explain it. Perhaps not.
Prof. Cole...as a long time reader and occasional poster, and as a non-academic in this particular field, I respectfully request that you give me, and the rest of us, a general overview of the middle east situation as we now all wonder about it. What's going on? I don't want to rely on the likes of Terry Bradshaw for my understanding of the complexities of this highly energized situation. I sometimes feel like it's 1937 and I'm living in Prague, or where ever, and I'm thinking that things are getting a bit out of control. Nest' pas? sg
Sorry to say it, but after following things, probably too obsessively over the past 40 years or so, Bradshaw has about the same chance of being right as anyone else. Are we 'post historical'?
I think that's probably how the SS would have handled it.

Please read Chapt. 5; "King of Munich", in Volker Urrich's recent political biography: 'Hitler, Ascent'. Not much more to be said.

History instructs us, unfortunately, that life is very cheap. I don't expect a change anytime soon.

Where is Saddam when you need him?

JC I hope you are right. But human nature often trumps reason as history sadly suggests.
Let's not conflate Buddhism with monotheism, polytheism or any other theism for that matter.
I'm waiting to hear Terry Bradshaw's explanation. He makes as much sense as anyone else on the issue.

Very comforting.

There is no monument to Air Marshall Tedder in England. Wonder why?
