  • For First Time, a US President backs a Fascist France
    • Bob H 04/24/2017 at 6:21 pm with 2 replies

I never imagined the day would come when the US President would conspire with Russia to destabilize the West. It borders on treason.

  • Will Trump use the Next ISIL attack to sweep away our Liberties?
    • Bob Hall 02/06/2017 at 4:09 pm

You wonder who among the Trump higher echelons will have the courage and patriotism to organize the 25th Amendment move. The fact that all are Republicans is discouraging.

  • In Shocker, Federal Judge in Seattle Halts Trump Muslim Ban
    • Bob h 02/04/2017 at 7:09 pm

I'm no lawyer, but if Trump is to mount an appeal, it has to be one employing coherent, rational, evidence-based arguments. We know that there are no such arguments. The Bowling Green Massacre will not do.

  • From Syria to Sanctions, Flynn-Russia Quid Pro Quo?
    • BobHall 01/16/2017 at 3:45 pm

So the next outrage is the USA becoming one of Assad's protectors? Assad does seem like Trump's kind of guy.

  • Comey should be fired if it's the last thing Obama Does
    • Bob hall 01/09/2017 at 8:11 am

Appointing him in the first place was one of the few things Obama did that I disapproved of. Why did a Democratic President feel compelled to do this?

  • Germany seeks Talks with Russia over Syria as Putin conducts Naval Maneuvers off Tartous

Inevitably the decapitation video of a Russian serviceman is on the way.

  • Top Iran General Endorses Nuclear Deal with US, UNSC
    • bob h 08/10/2015 at 7:04 am with 1 replies

Every military professional understands that nuclear weapons are basically unuseable in combat. So why not give up the possibility of having them in return for the end of sanctions that will allow you to build up your conventional power?

  • Trump Swiftboats McCain the Way W. Swiftboated John Kerry
    • bob h 07/20/2015 at 7:02 am

I remember a joint TV appearance of McCain and George McGovern when McCain disrespected and belittled McGovern, who was a highly decorated WWII pilot who felt no need to assert his manliness thru truculence and mindless belligerence, So if McCain got SwiftBoated too bad.

  • Do GOP Frontrunners have an Iran policy besides Sanctions and Bombs?
    • bob h 04/06/2015 at 6:32 am

The sanctions component of the Republican policy cannot be effective since the Europeans and others will relax their sanctions if the Republicans sabotage the deal. It is no policy at all.

  • Israel's Netanyahu jumps Shark with “Iran-Lausanne-Yemen” axis barb
    • bob h 04/01/2015 at 6:57 am

In the last days of the campaign he was inveighing against "Scandinavians" trying to impose their peace plans on Israel. So it should be "Iran-Lausanne-Yemen-Stockholm" axis.

    • bob h 03/31/2015 at 6:06 am

Not to mention that Israel undoubtedly possess a second strike nuclear force that would leave no one in Iran alive if used.

  • Iran's Khamenei: GOP Letter Disgusting, shows Decline of American System
    • bob h 03/15/2015 at 7:36 am

It is amazing how resistant we are in the US to the idea that we alone, or George W. Bush and his Neocons, have primary responsibility for the rise of ISIS.

  • Why Netanyahu's Congress Speech will Fail: Iran Can't be Stopped, only Monitored
    • bob h 02/26/2015 at 7:51 am with 2 replies

If Netanyahu feels he can intervene in our elections why can't we intervene in Israel's? Surely indicating to Israelis we would deal better with someone else would be appropriate?

  • Bad News for US Biotech: GOP's Scott Walker so anti-science he can't affirm Evolution
    • Bob H 02/14/2015 at 6:53 am

Why do Republican candidates go to England? The English have a sense of superiority to Americans derived from encounters with people like Walker, and their irreverent press is gunning for them.

  • Putin on the Nile: an Isolated Russia Seeks friends in Egypt w/ offer of Nuclear Plant
    • Bob H 02/11/2015 at 7:10 am

Living in Russia is only acceptable if you have the prospect of getting out of it on vacation. To take these steps to keep Egyptian vacations affordable, Putin is trying to keep the lid on rising frustration.

At the end of the day he's just another Republican wanting to cash in and his book advance probably dictated that he dish.

In any event Congressional Republicans will block any strike request from Obama, despite years of bellicosity on Iran.

  • Rush to Western Strike on Syria slows, but does not Stall
    • Bob h 08/29/2013 at 4:48 pm

"Getting the mix wrong" is supposed to excuse or exonerate the government? What I worry about is that much of the population of Damascus may have been exposed to levels of the gases that caused no immediate injury but will predispose over long time periods many thousands to cancers, etc. These gases are undoubtedly powerful carcinogens, among other things.

  • Kerry signals US Intervention in Syria, but to What End?
    • Bob h 08/27/2013 at 7:30 am

It is hardly possible that Assad would lash out at Israel, as Netanyahu would seize the opportunity to pulverize Syria. I think the idea of destroying airfields and fighter jets, which probably can be done with little risk, should be considered.

  • Obama's Limited Options: Bombing Syria unlikely to be Effective
    • Bob h 08/26/2013 at 6:41 am

This might be an opportunity to ground Assad's Air Force by tearing up his airfields, and destroying his fighters and helicopters. Show him there is a price to pay.

As for Israel's recent strikes, they were aimed at destroying stocks of anti-ship missiles being delivered to Hezbollah, and there is no talk of their having been delivered.

  • Brotherhood, Army risk Civil War: 30 Dead, Hundreds Wounded
    • Bob h 07/06/2013 at 10:23 am with 2 replies

I look at Egypt for what it might portend for our politics. The contempt for democracy and pluralism of the Brotherhood is mirrored in the habits of mind of our Republicans.

  • No Atheists in Foxholes, no Climate Change Deniers at front Lines of Wildfires
    • Bob h 07/04/2013 at 6:35 am

Republican hopes that they can run against the new Obama climate change rules might be sustained in West Virginia or Pennsylvania, but I doubt will be well received in burned over places like N. Arizona.

  • Obama should Resist the Clintons & Europe on Syria

It could be that Bill's zeal for a Hillary Presidency is clouding his judgement.
He hasn't been making sense lately, like telling Romney he thought he would win.

  • The Coming Israeli-Russian War?
    • Bob h 05/30/2013 at 6:16 am with 1 replies

According to the BBC the first shipment has already arrived, so this could be coming to a head rather soon. What is Russia going to do if Israel attacks these missiles, given that they probably cannot project conventional force into the Middle East, and that Israel is nuclear armed?

  • Media Ignores Climate Change Background of Increased Flooding (Media Matters Short)
    • Bob h 05/26/2013 at 6:52 am with 3 replies

The conservative mind has difficulty understanding that increased concentrations of water vapor in the atmosphere represent the effects of increased evaporation due to higher temperatures, and also represent increased latent energy for storms.

Most of those opposed to the idea of global climate change seem not to have grasped some of the basic ideas of high school chemistry and physics.

Mount Vernon is the gateway to the vacation spots of the San Juan Islands and this could have a devastating impact on the tourism industry there.

  • Dear Oklahoma: We Feel for you, we love you, but do us some favors
    • Bob h 05/23/2013 at 6:38 am

Oklahomans could also brush up on their history and note that the state would be a vast wasteland were it not for the intervention of FDR during the Dust Bowl and Federal imposition of better land management practices. Given that you owe your existence to the Federal government, why do you keep sending troglodytes to DC who oppose everything the government does?

  • Obama must Make Fighting Climate Change National Project, or Die the death of a thousand Scandals
    • Bob h 05/17/2013 at 6:28 am

I think we can agree that the Republican Party, which prevents the nation from assuming the leadership role on climate change, is a tragedy for the entire planet.

You wonder whether a lot of this is calculated to increase his street value to people like Fox and other right wing media. He's identified a punditry niche that is not overcrowded, and says things he may not really believe to keep his name in the news and assist his positioning.

Harvard has both Ferguson and Rogoff?

  • Why Obama doesn't want to intervene in Syria
    • Bob h 05/02/2013 at 7:10 am

What the Russian reaction might be to a direct US intervention is something that Obama is also probably weighing.

  • Are Chemical Weapons use in Syria really Obama's Red line? (Feaver)
    • Bob h 04/28/2013 at 7:07 am with 1 replies

It seems highly implausible to me that chemical weapons would be used as asserted within the capitol Damascus. Saddam used them against the Kurds in a remote region, but I cannot believe he would have used them in Baghdad, no matter how desperate. It just seems highly improbable.

  • How We're making a Frankenstein's Monster of our Climate (Giesen)
    • Bob h 03/31/2013 at 6:46 am

The global warming/climate change phenomenon is really just an expression of the law that energy must be conserved- any imbalance in the incoming and outgoing planetary radiation must be manifested in other forms of energy- rising temperatures of ocean and air, wind speed, or latent energy of waterr vapor. Deniers are in the incredible position of denying that energy must be conserved. Do they have any idea how stupid that is?

  • Chuck Hagel Mauled in Bizarro World of US Senate
    • Bob h 02/02/2013 at 7:52 am with 3 replies

One of the most sickening things about the hearings was the indignation shown towards Hagel 's concern about the Palestinians. Concern about Palestinians is a crime in DC.

Even if he gets thru, the pro-Israel lobby will have gotten what it wanted from the hearings-to show who is in charge, and what fate aw sits apostates.

  • Jon Stewart on the Israeli Elections: 50% of Israel is "anti-Semitic" since they rebuked Netanyahu
    • Bob h 01/26/2013 at 6:58 am

To the extent he comes to Washington at all, Netanyahu presumably will be exhibiting a bit more humility and less open contempt for our President.

Philip Roth has a great takedown of the xenophobic settler mentality in his "The Counterlife" from 1987. This must have earned him accusations of anti-Semitism at the time.

I hope your lawsuit against Bush administration officials is proceeding. I recall that you were blackballed from a Yale job.

I just accepted that the film was mostly fiction, and was able to enjoy it on that level. But I cannot forgive Bigelow and Boal for their suggestion that Obama was a lying hypocrite on torture.

  • How Zero Dark Thirty Taught us to Stop Worrying and Love Torture (Greenberg)
    • Bob h 01/11/2013 at 7:23 am

Bush said "we don't torture" at a time when we were. Obama said the same thing after ordering it stopped, and this occurs in the film at a time when the film suggests it is still occurring. Far from glorifying him, the film makes Obama look like a lying hypocrite.

    • Bob h 01/09/2013 at 7:35 am with 1 replies

Controversial: after the terrorist threat that caused a 100% increase in national security spending has been eliminated, the defense budget should be cut accordingly.

  • NASA: Portrait of a Polluted Atmosphere
    • bob h 12/15/2012 at 7:27 am

We're going to be hearing a lot more about aerosols because they can counter the carbon dioxide heat trapping effect by shielding the earth from solar radiation and serving as condensation sites for reflective cloud formation. We will see studies from Exxon, American Enterprise Institute, et. al. advocating seeding atmosphere with aerosols so we can go on burning fossil fuels. Dangerous ideas.
